  • Aspartame carb count??

I love to use Equal..I realize people are highly opinionated against it..but it tastes just like sugar to me.. I put 4 packets in a large cup of coffee and five in a jumbo glass of decaf iced tea. I have not been able to find a carb count for the amounts I use. Does anyone know how many carbs are in 2 packets? I bought Stevia but didn't like it. Please respond if you know! Thanks puggles

Each packet should be counted as 1 carb. Same goes for splenda.

        Re: Aspartame carb count??

Count it as a carb a packet and call it good...I don't think it so much that people are "opinionated" about it as it is advised in DANDR not to use it..and being this is the ADBB we pretty much have to "advise by the book here" ..... it has been reported to cause stalls and bring back cravings in people.....but if that is not you and you are doing fine loosing weight and no cravings..well 1 carb a packet
IMHO if you are fine with something other peoples opinion should not matter

I drink REAL coffee and have the entire time ... it is my "liquid ritalin" ..if I did not drink it people would be pulling me off the ceiling ....I can not tell others this is "good" practice because DANDR advised against it it is an addictive drug and blah blah blah......but I can tell you for me it did not cause a problem in my weight loss journey and it helps me focus, I do not have any noticable blood sugar rebounding ...most important keeps me warm, pretty sane and happy

the truth of the matter ..this is a very good book giving you good sound advice for the most part it is in your best interest to stick to it..I did (except the coffee) ...but no one is perfect so enjoy this and do what you can .....

I looked it up on the USDA site and here's what they say:

          1 Packet:
          4 calories
          .89 carbs

            Re: Aspartame carb count??

Thanks for everyone's reply. I did look on the side of the box and it notes 1 packet as a serving for 0 carbs. Never have I only used one packet for a serving, usually 4 or 5. Now I know my carefully counted carbs minus all my equal packets = probably double my daily carb allowance. Now I will try stevia drops w/ 1 equal. Does anyone know if there are different allowances for the tablets for Equal? Although I have not been able to find the tablets. thanks. puggles

              Re: Aspartame carb count??

The sweeteners are limited to 3 servings daily. In the 1992 DANDR, Dr. Atkins explained that in his clinical observation of his patients, "excessive" use of Aspartame (specifically) caused weight loss stalls or slow downs in some of his patients. He defined "excessive" as 3 or more servings per day.

So the DANDR 2002 3 sweetener limit is a carry-over from that.

Heidi3 very nice response,I agree entirely with you.A major part of this way of life is getting to know what works for you.I have found somes things Atkins says are okay to have on this plan did not work well for me and some gray areas caffeine and aspartame, had no affect on my weight loss at all.The point is to have an eating plan and make adjustments as necessary.Staying the course as recommended in the book is a great starting point.

ok..what about the Da Vinci Syrups? 1 pt per teaspoon? Also, I wonder how a diet sprite or other splenda/equal sodas can be zero when they taste to me like 4/5 of the packets.

They use pure liquid Splend in soft drinks so there's none of the bulking powder which is what gives the packets their carbs. Da Vinci syrups do have some carbs from all the flavorings that are added to them. Figure about 2 1/2 carbs per cup of syrup.

a huge part of this for me was letting go of being obsessive and just looking at food with a moderate eye!

                      besides I love coffee

now do not talk to me about peanuts and peanut butter because that is a HUGE trigger/problem/issue/insanity for me ...I will eat an entire jar before I realize it

just rememeber every thing you consume that has sweetner added counts in your 3 a day limit and we have to count it based on the manufactureres serving size so 1 can of soda is 1.5 sevings of your sweetner.

Da Vinci typically uses liquid Splenda which has no carbs, but each serving counts (1-2 tablespoons depending on the flavor, iirc) towards the daily 3 sweeteners.

There's 16 tablespoons per cup so 1 cup of DaVinci's is about 5 days worth of sweetener allotments.
