  • I am getting brave and COOKING!!!

Okay, so those who know me know I CANNOT cook to save my life. I never had the desire to learn either. Well, since being on the WOL, I LOVE to cook! I may not be the best, but practice makes perfect, right?

So, I took a couple of recipes and I am going to be trying them over the next couple of days!!!

I am making bunless chili dogs tonight. They look so yummy and DH is so excited ! LOL

Tomorrow night is Monteray Bacon Chicken....I can cook Chicken so, I'm excited!

I also made some of Allie's famous Fried Mushrooms last night.. DELISH!

And I also got the stuff to make Mock Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I am so excited to try all of these great things! The cinnamon toast crunch will only be a special treat..but I know DH will love it b/c it's his favorite cereal.

Ahhh, I hope I can make these things without burning down the kitchen! LOL Wish me Luck!

                    Good for you!

My advice for a newbie chef....

                    1. Make sure you have all the ingredients before you start cooking.
                    2. Measure everything out and put them in front of you.
                    3. Keep the recipe nearby when you are cooking. If it's in a book, copy the recipe onto a piece of paper (so your book doesn't get covered in food.)
                    4. Relax and enjoy yourself. If it doesn't turn out exactly like the photo, don't worry. The more you cook and get used to the way ingredients are put together, the more comfortable you'll be.

And 5. watch the cooking shows on tv. They'll show you cooking technique and 'how to'. Don't limit yourself to the low carb cooking shows either, because the more you watch the technique of cooking the better you'll learn.

Re: I am getting brave and COOKING!!!

Gee thanks so much everyone! You guys are all so helpful!!! I didn't thinkI would get this much attention for wanting to cook! LOL

It's kinda personal for me. DH's mom can cook a mean dinner and I can't. She's always cooking him dinner (we live here for the time being ) And I feel like she's over stepping a little bit. I try and it gets messed up, and she makes something else that he really loves like b/c I can't cook and my food is burned. It really hurts my feelings.

Well, not tonight! I am making my bunless chili dogs. I am going to PRE READ the directions before anyhting is turned on! LOL and I am going to premeasure everything and stick the recipe right on the cabinet door.

Thanks so much for helping me you guys. I don't have a mother that I can turn to and get support and advise. She never taught me how to cook. Having you guys makes me very happy. I cannot say thank you enough.

Cooking is something I think everyone should know how to do. So, you'll get tons of support from me!

Does your MIL live with you or near you? Maybe you can ask her to teach you how to cook your hubby's favorite meals? That's a great way to learn to cook as well.

Re: I am getting brave and COOKING!!!

We live with her for the time being. I have actually tried that already and got shut down really quick. I even asked if I could make a copy of the recipe and watch, and I "clutter" the kitchen, and she can never seem to find the recipes...yea okay.

I just decided I'll make foods that he likes until I have my own recipes that he enjoys. He even said that b/c of how nasty she is, he doesn't even want to eat the foods...!! Gotta love him! LOL

He loves shrimp...I can steam shrimp, ANd I gor the recipe for "Shrimp Alfredo" from the recipe forum. The one that uses spaghetti squash. He is startign Atkins today, so I am so excited about beign able to recreate his favorite foods, LC style!! AHAH!

That's something that I know how to do, and he'll not only appreciate that I'm cooking LC for him, but that I'm trying to make what HE likes. If ya can't beat 'em..uh,, COOK LOW CARB!! LOL

Re: I am getting brave and COOKING!!!

Okay, uncooperative MIL. Gotcha. You'll meet cooks like that. Believe me, I've wasted my time and money on recipes that have steps and ingredients purposefully left out. My motto is if you don't want to share your recipe, fine, I can understand if you want to keep it a secret, but don't give me a dummy recipe so I waste my time and money.

Look in the Main dishes forum because there are a number of shrimp recipes there. I know I posted a spicy garlic shrimp recipe that's super easy (the worst part is measuring the spice mixture and mixing it together with the shrimp!).

Oh hun. You are what? 20? Is that right? Not many people are brilliant cooks at that age. It just takes practice. I'm a better cook since I've been doing Atkins (and I'm waaaay older than you). The recipes are pretty easy and yummy. My family doesn't care that they are low-carb, they only care that they are delish. Sounds like your sweet hubby fell very far from the parental tree. heee. You are lucky that you have him on your side.
