  • Sugar substitute question

If a recipe calls for say 1 cup of sugar substitute, then how many carbs does that count for?

How many serving sizes it that? You have to go by the serving sizes and figure it out.

It would be for the whole recipe.

Whenever I try a new recipe I go to fitday and type in all the ingredients for the whole recipe, then divide by how many servings to find the carb count per serving.

This is for a recipe for zucchini muffins. Actually I was thinking of using 3/4 cup sugar substitute and then 1/4 cup davinci sf vanilla syrup and then omitting the vanilla the recipe calls for.

      Does anyone know?

Let's see - 48 tsp's per cup, 1.5 tsp per packet of sweetener, 1 carb per packet, so that would be 32 carbs per 1 cup! Add in any other carbs in the recipe, then divide by the number of servings.

          Thank you!

One more question, would the sugar free vanilla syrup count about the same?

That's what I meant by how many serving sizes--how many serving sizes of sweetener is it!

that will depend on the sweetener you use too and the source Splenda Measureable and Splenda packets are not the same sweetness per size one packet is about 1/2 t but has the sweetenr of 2t of sugar while the measurable stuff is 2t measured is 2t sugar taste.

Exactly, that is why you have to check the serving size on the package of the stuff that you are using and cannot figure out a general rule here.

I use splenda granular. Would that be the same carb count? Oh and sugar free davinci syrup.

Thanks you guys for trying to help me figure this out. I couldn't find the amount anywhere on the internet.

Count one carb per serving--use the serving size as listed on the box.

I finally found the answer on another low carb forum. Splenda has 24g carb per cup in case anyone else is interested.

I ran across something else I wanted to share.

You can combine Sugar Twin and Splenda and use much less of the both of them together than you would use if just using one. If a recipe calls for 1 cup of Splenda, you could use 1/4 cup of Splenda and 1/4 cup of Twin for the same sweetening power. So that would only be 9 carbs!
Also there's supposed to be no aftertaste when you use them together.

I'm definitely going to try this one!

Hmmm...the main ingredient of sugar twin (per their web site) is dextrose. So then I looked to make sure dextrose was what I thought it was --"Dextrose is glucose sugar refined from corn starch. Dextrose is a sweetener and a readily available source of energy. Dextrose is produced by the enzyme conversion of corn starch and then refined by ion-exchange demineralization."

                          Personally, I wouldn't use it.

Actually the spoonable version of sugar twin that is used for recipes contains maltodextrin and saccharin. It is the individual packets that contain dextrose.

I took a look at the Splenda website and it says Splenda contains dextrose and/or maltodextrin and sucralose. The ingredients are listed on the diabetes page.

So the main difference between the two being saccharin -vs- sucralose.

If you were trying to avoid dextrose then sugar twin would be the way to go.

Thanks for the clarification! I didn't think to look at spoonable vs packets or Splenda vs Sugar Twin! Duh me!

My artificial sweetener of choice has always been Sweet n'Low -- but I gave them ALL up about 5 days ago. Well, at least, I'm trying to give them all up - - that occassional Diet Rite keeps getting in the way...sigh.

By the way, what's this recipe you're making??
