  • My favorite cooking utensil/gadget

Admitted kitchen gadget fiend here. Kitchen stores rank right up there with shoe stores. But my chopping gadgets are outta business now ...

I've fallen in love with a Santuko knife. It's like a chef's knife, but thinner and with scallops in it so it gliiiiiiides through everything. I think I make salad more often just so we can spend time together.

Also love the bacon tray and egg poacher. Very handy for an ATkinsy girl.

    What's your favorite gadget?

Heidi, how's that mandoline working out for you?

Ever since they reviewed immersion blenders in Cooks Illustrated last month I've been saying that's my next new toy! It looks like a great way to thicken soups and sauces without using flour or guar gum or whatever. Is it hard to clean?

I find it hard to clean when I use thicker ingredients. Stuff gets stuck underneath the blade, but an old toothbrush does the job easily.

Well I finally caved and got a kitchen aid food processor. Yeah, it was a lot of $$$$ that I don't really have, but I love it.

Ok, this is more of an appliance than a gadget, but I saw it in a catalog this week and MUST have it! I'll be dropping hints to my dear boyfriend from now until my birthday. Fresh herbs in the kitchen year round!

I still say my salad spinner as it goes for a whirl every day. I also love my stick (immersion) blender. It's not hard to clean if you do it right away. I stick it in something full of water, like a measuring cup or bowl - whatever's handy and turn it on. It "blends" the water and cleans under the blade.

OMG Lady it took forever for me to be convinced a salad spinner was worth it...now I have two ...a little one for herbs that I use all the time and a big one for lettuce.... they are awesome I am always stunned at the water I find on those leaves ....I used to go out side shake them all over the place now it is all easy in the spinner!!!

It's the AeroGarden indoor herb garden -- new in the Sur La Table catalog. All you do is drop in the seed pods, and then it takes care of light and watering.

But when I first saw it I had the same reaction as Heidi

LOL. Thankfully that is something I never tried (growing or smoking). Gosh, I would weigh 400 pounds if I had...everyone I have ever known to do it was a muchie machine.

Can people really grow it in Canada? WOW...
