  • Turnip revisited

OK I have bought my first turnip ever. I had remembered them as bitter from my childhood and never bothered with them. So now I have 3 small pretty ones tell me how to make them wonderful

    Re: Turnip revisited

We like Betty's scalloped turnips recipe. The kids find it a bit rich though, so we cut back on the cream cheese a bit. We also roast them in the oven as turnip fries. Growing up mom would just boil and mash them but that's kinda boring. Good luck with your turnips.

I use turnips in the cauliflower faux mashed potatoes recipe. For me and for my unsuspecting guests, the turnip gives the cauliflower mash a "potato" flavor. I use a 2 to 1 cauliflower to turnip ratio.

          Re: Turnip revisited

Personally I used to love to eat them sliced cold and raw ...just as they are ..maybe some salt ...but they have been so bitter and soft here the past few years I have given up ...

growing them in the garden I get TONS of greens (yum) but a marble sized turnip because the dirt here is so damnn rich...

            Re: Turnip revisited

I've posted this before on the site in my journal chat, but I really like it so I'll post it again.

            Turnip Salad

-4 cups cooked turnip cut up into small pieces (should still be a little firm, mushy turnip does not work for this recipe)
            -4 hard boiled eggs chopped

            -2 tablespoons minced onion

            -1 cup mayonnaise

            -Salt to taste

            -Pepper to tas
            te

            -Garlic Powder to taste

Mix it all up! Then chill it in the fridge for about 30 minutes... you can eat it right away but I think it tastes better after it's sit for a little while. I love this recipe and now prefer it to potato salad because the turnips have more flavor!

No stats. Not weighing anymore ever. Will post "before and after" pictures when I want to. The end.

I was not sure if I would even like them DH wanted his creamed. So I diced and boiled then added a handful to my soup and put rest aside to cream for DH. I liked them.

I remember something about fries I will try that next and I am looking all over for the scalloped recipe

Here's the scalloped turnips recipe! I'm not very good at linking but I'm a whiz at cut & paste - heee This is TTDriver's recipe. We had it with ham for Easter and the rest of the family forgot they weren't potatoes.

                My scalloped turnips!!

4 turnips, peeled and sliced THIN

                1/3 cup fresh chopped onion
                minced green pepper to taste
                4 oz cream cheese softened
                1 cup heavy cream
                4 oz shredded cheddar
1/4 cup butter sliced into pats
                Crumbled bacon (optional)

Spray 8x8 pan with Pam. Add sliced turnips, onion, green pepper. Salt and pepper to taste. Add pats of butter. Add cream cheese and pour heavy cream over the top. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Bake at 400 for an hour. Top with bacon if desired.

                DELISH!
