  • Suggestions on Products to Use

    Hello All,

I have been on induction for 3 weeks now, and extremely satisfied with the results I've seen. I have the book and have been reading many threads. The book calls for meats without nitrates. I like to eat turkey bacon as well as deli meats but from what I see they all include nitrates.

SOMEBODY HELP!!! I just want to know of the food brands and products you use. Bacon, mayo, deli meat, anything to help.

    Thanks in advance!!!

I know people talk about Boarshead is that it you guys???

also I try to buy cured meat at local butchers and just ask how they make the stuff like bacon or sausage..and also ask "show me the ones do not contain sugars, nitrates or fillers" they love showing off and will give you freebies of new items ..and a bone for your dog ...when they get to know you well all the butchers I go to use hormone free meat and avoid nitrates in their specialty items ..they are very proud of themselves

You can get nitrate free bacon in the freezer section of most health food stores. Personally I think it tastes like crap and its very very expensive! They keep it frozen because it spoils quickly with no preservatives in it.

Whole foods also carries nitrate free organic bacons at least in my town.

Boars Head brand is the best Deli meats as far as sugars and added fillers go, I'm not 100% sure about the nitrate thing with Boars Head though. They do have a website that you can check for info.

Re: Suggestions on Products to Use

Thank you ladies so much. I have gone to Boar's Head's website and printed out the nutritional information. I have also contacted the local distributors to find out which stores have the product. So I'm on my way. I definitely am going to stick with my turkey bacon, and have to deal with it. I've lost weight with it before, and it's not a cornerstone to my WOE so I should be fine.

          Thanks Again!

Also watch the sodium amount in delit meats, i saw a deli roasted chicken breast pack that had 1500 g's of sodium in 3 slices! That's a huge amoutn of sodium! Sodium can cause water retention (and alot of it in general is not good).

didn't someone come out with a study saying tha nitrates aren't the evil that we all thought they were?

I think I'm okay on the bacon front now. If you all could just make some suggestions about the various products you've used and continue to use I would appreciate it. I think many of us newcomers as well as others could gain some insight.

Oh, the best Mayo IMO (if you have it in your area) is Duke's brand!

Re: Suggestions on Products to Use

I dont buy a lot of "pre done" products per say. more meats, cheeses, veggies etc and whip up my own.

Condiments of choice- milwaukees best baby dillpickles. plain old frenchs mustard. garlic mustard aoli from trader joes. spices from Penzeys (pork rub, other various rubs, dried herbs etc). xatham gum (from the local health food place). greek yogurt from trader joes (once you get to dairy rung). Hellmans mayo.

My biggest suggestion would be to check out the local farmers markets in your area. There is nothing better then talking to the growers of the produce, the farmers that grew the cow that is the meat etc etc and learning what they feed/use for fertilizers etc and making that relationship. Once you get to be a regular, if you need special items, its not a problem for them. You get the freshest, most nutritionally sounds foods possible and youhelp out a local grower.
