Question about fish... what is the least fishy tasting fish? I have never been one to eat fish, but i'm running out of things to do with other meats. I can handle canned tuna, but that is as far as it goes, and i'm allergic to shellfish. I've heard Ahi is a good one, but I came to the experts to get the real answers

    Re: Fish?

The Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook indicates that Rainbow trout, Tilapia, and Whitefish are the most delicate flavored freshwater fish and Cod, Haddock, Halibut, Orange roughy, and Sole are the most delicate flavored saltwater fish. I believe that the least fishy tasting fish is the freshest fish. My personal favorite is Tilapia.

      Re: Fish?

Im really picky about fish too and enjoy mild flavors only. Tilapia, yellow perch (freshwater), cod, mahi mahi are the ones I enjoy. I found halibut way too strong tasting (it was fresh, I caught it myself!), and I think whitefish is strong and bony. I enjoy salmon a lot if its very firm and prepared properly. I grew up on the great lakes so Im very particular about my fish... invest in GOOD fish, the best you can and find a fish monger in your area if possible. If you get a good fish monger you can tell them what you like and dont and they will be able to steer you in the right direction and help with preperation ideas

Rare tuna steaks with wasabi are yummy. So is swordfish and salmon. If the fish is prepared properly it shouldn't taste "fishy". Each type has it's own distinctive flavor. Maybe you could go somewhere and have a friend order a dish they like and sample it before you commit to a particular one.

I like all kinds of fish...even the really "fishy" ones. However, Cod would probably be the one I'd recommend to a new fish eater. It's light and very mild in flavor.

I like shark too, it's not fishy tasting, but it's a very heavy/dense meat.

I'm just like you I can't stand a fish that tastes or smells too strong so I usually eat Cod or Orange Roughy. The Orange Roughy is a little on the expensive side but if you get the frozen stuff it's a whole lot cheaper.

I believe I will go for talapia or mahi mahi... and hope for the best. I've tried salmon before, a friend had ordered, oh gosh i thought it was gross. When fish is cooked, any fish in general, is it best to brush it with olive oil and grill it? What do you guys think would be the best preparation?

                Re: Fish?

if fish smells or tastes fishy you should not eat it ..that smell and taste is bacteria...fish should smell wonderful and fresh no fishy smell and it should taste the same way...

fish has gotten a bad name because of people not getting really fresh stuff ...frozen fish tends to be stronger than a nice fresh piece of fish

I would rec halibut over talapia that is for sure halibut is wonderful white fish with dense meat and very yummy ...

just remember do not over cook it ..fish should be taken off the heat before it is cooked all the way so that it finishes at the resting temp and does not dry out

personally I love anything from the sea or lake or river just handle it and prepare it with care and you should be in great shape!!

                  Re: Fish?

I consider cod the "white bread" of fish. Tilapia is more widely available now than it used to be. Lemon juice and fresh cracked pepper is a must for my fish. And like someone said, wasabi. Heck, enough wasabi and you won't taste fish at all!

I like talapia dipped in low carb soy sauce flavored tempura and deep friend

one of my favorite ways to prepare a meaty fish like hailbut or cod or anything dense... is to grind up pecans or hazelnuts (really almonds or any nut you like ..macadamia are really good with fish!) ... with some salt and fresh cracked pepper ..dip the fish in lemon butter and roll in the nuts put in the oven and bake about 375F 10 min per inch thickness of the fish ....this is to die for

I just love any type of fish

                    do you guys eat sardines?

                      Mmmmmmm... the the nut breading!
Neewwwwoooooo to the sardines. They keep starin' at me.
Of course, now I feel slightly ashamed. I have never really given them the time of day. Are we talkin' canned sardines? like in mustard sauce? Little fresh "bait" type sardines? Geeeeez, Heidi! Now I have to try them again. I have this sick macabre fascination about eating whole animals or organ meats. It's so so... primal. *giggle* and cooooool.

I am talking any type of sardines

I love the tiny ones in oil bristling sardines

drain them and mash them up with some lime juice, green onion, minced jalepeno, sour cream. kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper (everything to taste)... then eat it spread on jicama slices

or just dump the entire cake of them onto a salad with some lime juice

fresh ones I like deep fried but they are impossible to find here!

Oh yes, I loves sardines... So convenient too... you can keep some cans in the car and then open them at a picnic or something, though don't expect any company if you crack one open and start mawing down! lol

But seriously, I love every kind of fish I've ever tried. My mom says it's because she ate fish constantly her entire pregnancy (no fear of the mercury, I guess) with me. I agree with the others, "fishy" fish is bad fish.

For tilapia, I like to make it in the oven, with Linda Sue's recipe: http://users3.ev1.net/%7Efontlady/baked_tilapia.html It's just really easy and delicious... that recipe works with a number of other fish too. Enjoy!

My absolute favorite fish is Swordfish. If you like beef, grill some swordfish on the grill with a little bit of seasoning (maybe a cajun) and it is so dang dense and good. It reminds me of beef at times.
