  • I found dinner on the side of the road :)

OMG on my way to work this morning I had to pull over and run into the woods and grab the most wonderful dinner I can think of today

a huge cluster of Prince mushrooms!!! aka Agaricus augustus they are usually around late summer early fall here but was I lucky or what??? ..these are one of my top favorites on the planet ...I tossed this amazing batch in the back of my car and as soon as I get off and commute home I will be embraced by the smell of almonds ..because these babies are so aromatic a huge amount of pleasure with them is the smell ...here is a link and a pic that looks exactly like the cluster I found ...I am beside myself!!!
    and no fly larvae either!
    http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/A..._augustus.html

ok it is fun to jump out of the car and find food ...it is fun to have a load of giant mushrooms (one is the size of my head ) in my arms and run back to my car...it is fun to drive home smelling them ..it is fun thinking about what I am going to make with them ..Steak ...it is fun showing my husband who will be as excited as I am about this dinner...it is fun cooking them and most of all it will be fun putting this savory almond scented bite into my watering mouth this evening !!!

I know I should be sensible and warn you all about not picking mushrooms if you do not know what you are doing..but at the same time ..you guys there is a feast in the forrests and all you have to do is LEARN!!!!

I figure learn all the deadly ones first ...then the ones that make you sick second ..then the rest are edible and yours for the picking ...

forraging is so much fun and now I have about $80 worth of wild mushrooms waiting for me in the car and I can not wait to get out of here and go be with them

    does anyone else pick mushrooms?

I want to forage. There are actually seminar/nature walks on it at some of the larger parks here.

Re: I found dinner on the side of the road

you know I cooked rattlesnake I felt so bad because they eat rats and anything that eats rats is my freind!!! the snake had been accidently hit by a jeep and killed it was 6 ft long and my husband felt bad when he saw it hit ...and figured why waste it I guess...so he and his friends brought this big snake home and asked me to cook it ..far be it for me to resist a culinary challange!!! .......so they cleaned it and cut it up..then I marinated it then deep fried it like chicken .... I had no idea what to do with it !...considering I had never seen anything more than a garter snake in Providence!...

...no rattlesnake does not taste like chicken ..it tastes like rattlesnake...it was ok but imho not worth killing one to eat it ...they are amazing creatures I think...

over the years I have been married to this country boy ...he has given me all kinds of things to cook ....you would NOT believe what he brought home when we lived in Panama!!!!

I draw the line at rodents....and a opossum is tooo much like a giant rat! ew!

those mushrooms were amazing the nice part about the Prince is they come back in flushes so I will keep my eye on that spot!!! I also took the biggest one and put a piece of it down under a tree in my yard I hope it reproduces so I have my own patch

if you want to you should do it ...even if you never eat a thing you pick it is still so much fun to go look!!

when I was growing in the city the Italian grandmothers of my friends used to pick mushrooms in the city parks I loved following them around trying to understand what they were telling me ....it started me off as an early urban forrager!!

Re: I found dinner on the side of the road

When I lived in New Hampshire with my hick BF at the time, one day his best friend who lived in Goffstown called us up. He wanted us to come over, which wasn't so out of the ordinary. What was, was that he was super excited, as his Dad had hit (and killed) and large moose and they had cut it up to eat it. Yes...a moose.
His Dad drove a large pick up truck on which he had replaced the metal bed with one made out of wood. They're favorite passtime was shooting cans off a rock. The mountain they lived on...they dubbed that "big tit mountain"...because it sorta looked like a tit (don't all mountains?). His mom was the first person to ever pass me a bong.

                        lol at the bong..

But moose meat, YUM. If cooked right it is superb.... Nuttin hick about that. Peeps pay big bucks to come here to Maine for moose lottery hunts. I have a friend in Fl that has shelled out mucho cash to a guide service to do a moose hunt. Kinda the norm here, there are hick into it as well, but if a deer or moose is not ruined in a crash the meat is a nice treat!!

hmm, or, maybe that jsut makes me a hick too!!! LOL..

that was a bit butch of her
