  • I've got a question!

What brand of hotdogs can I use with these that don't contain any nitrates? I used Nathan brand tonight which is less than 1 gram of carbs per hotdog, but reading the label, I discovered sodium nitrates listed in the ingredients. I don't know how this went undetected by my oldest daugher, Katie! :raving Shhhhhh..don't tell her that i screwed up again! Should have done better reading of the label at the store. Our little secret, okay?

    The Bun-less Chili Dog

    1 pound ground beef
    olive oil
    1/2 medium onion; chopped
    2 garlic cloves; minced
    2 T worstershire sauce
    1 small can tomato sauce
    1 T chili powder
    1 shredded mild cheddar

    1 pkg hotdogs
    1 T butter
    2 T favorite hot sauce

Score hotdogs, bring to boil in sauce pan. drain. set aside.

Add a couple quick rounds of olive oil; add beef; onion; garlic; brown.
Add worsterchire sauce; chili powder; salt; black pepper; 3-4 min.
Add tomato sauce; blend; let simmer on low heat.

Add butter; hot sauce to small frying pan on medium/high heat; melt to Blend together; add hotdogs and toss and rotate until casings are fully cooked.

Place hotdogs in a small baking dish; cover with beef mixture; sprinkle with cheese and place under broiler until melted; serve.

I swear to god, my heart soared! They were delicious! I made some for the kids with the bun and they loved them, too! This was a recipe Maria wrote down from the Food Network..now I know her source!

    full of nitrates,
    Ben

The nitrates won't inhibit weight loss. Dr. A said to avoid them because they have been associated with cancer.

Hebrew National brand has minimal additives, especially the dinner sized hot dogs.

So, is it safe to conclude, all brands contain some levels of nitrates. This is not good news. I don't worry how they will impact my weight loss, but am concerned about the long-term effects on my health. My family's health. Maybe it would be worth stopping in at a health food store and seeing what, if anything, would be available.

Imagine life without an occassional hotdog. It can't be done. Not in my mind anyway. lol.

            determined,
            Ben

Geez, we're already giving up the beans, Dieselbud! What more must we sacrafice? Leave out the tomato now and you got...uh...i don't know....give me a name for it. How about: chili flavored smuck with melted cheese. lol.

Ben go back and edit your post to remove the not induction safe please to avoid the confusing. If you can't you can PM a mod and they can alter it for you. :yes That is a great induction meal as long as you can control yourself and not consume too much.

For OWL rung 6 beans would make a great addition too. Thanks for the great idea.

Nitrates are the presevatives in most deli style meats

They are only as Megs said a cancer warning not a Atkins weightloss warning. Dr Atkins was looking out for use all over our health not just our weight. :yes

Oh good, I am glad it is induction safe because I have eaten all of those things many times. It sounded like a great idea...and I have been craving chili lately.

If you have a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods, I think you can get nitrite-free dogs there. I have tried the TJ's uncured ones and they are pretty good. But for me -- give me a Boar's Head dog any time! They also make a lite version which isn't packed with carb fillers and is lower fat, if you prefer to get your fat from more healthful sources!

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one standing in front of the weenies feeling like a fool reading every doggone label three or four times trying to make a decision.....lol, but then again I may be the only one who does it in front of the hotdogs, bacon, sausage...then I head to the deli counter and harrass the crap out of the deli girls too! LOL, last time they told me to come back when Susie was there-she does atkins too and knows the best of everything they have. I said what makes you think I'm on atkins? The one girl laughed and said, well you were over there(pointing to the hotdog, bacon, sausage section) for more than 30 mins because you were there when I left for lunch and are still over here now and I'm back and you're over here asking a thousand questions about sugar carbs and nitrates. They said to call and ask for Susie in Deli during the day and she'll tell me or write me a list to pick up next time I'm in. It was kind of embarrassing, but they were really sweet. I feel so stupid sometimes.....but **** it's just so confusing! I guess I'll ask her about hotdogs and stuff too when I call so she can help me out with the local brands around here. We don't have any of the stores I keep reading people talk about. We have Schnucks, Buehlers Buy Low, Wesselmans and SavALot. And a SuperWalmart thats about 20-25 mins from where I live depending on road construction (or deconstruction as we commonly call it here)

4myself4kids: We must be twins separated at birth. I needed the laughter you just gave me. You detailed a trip to the market for me, perfectly. I could see myself in your words. I always figured it was security that tipped them off: Oh great, he's here again. Now i know it's the body language giving me away. People stop and ask all the time: You look confused, can i help you find something? :confused

DUH!!!!! :smackhead Never thought about security! LOL, shoot, they probably watch me like a hawk....first in the meats, then when I head to dairy its almost as bad...which cream? cheese? how many eggs? By the time I get to the canned goods, the kids have worn me out and I can't hardly read labels anymore. Shoot, my DS is smart enough now, that he doesn't like going with me anymore. Used to be the way he'd nag me into a few things he doesn't ordinarily get, but anymore he'd just as soon stay home! LOL, now if I could only get to the store without my 2 yr old, I might be in for a long trip of aggravating security & Susie in the deli! ROFL!
