    Re: Larb

I'm interested in knowing this recipe because I love my Thai food, but the name made me laugh a little - larb is what happened to me when I ate too many carbs.

    Lard and carbs = larby

    Don't hate me because I'm a twit.

      Re: Larb

I was looking around, most of the recipes out there say that what makes this dish is the toasted rice. I did see an Americanized version that used peanuts instead.

        here you go babycakes
you do not need the roasted rice flour or the roasted rice just do this and you have it made!!! I love this Thai Chopped salad and make it (and the variations of it I make up) once a week during the summer!

        Low Carb Larb!

1 lb of chicken cooked and minced up (I actually just cook an entire chicken and then bone it and dice it with a cleaver)
a bunch of fresh cilantro chopped up
a bunch of basil chopped up
a bunch of green onions chopped up
        1 nice fat shallot minced
minced chiles to taste (I like the Thai bird chiles but you can also use chile paste about a tablespoon)
1/4 cup good fish sauce Phu Quoc is THE brand of fish sauce that imho beats all others!!! very yummy
        2-3 limes squeezed
        3 cloves garlic smashed
chopped cabbage mixed with chopped spring mixed lettuce
chopped peanuts if you want them

just toss the whole thing together mixing well and garnish with peanuts if you like put in a big bowl and eat with chop sticks! and sugar free Thai iced tea..can you get the real Thai tea? it is in most Southeast Asian markets I just make the unsweetened tea add some cream and a packet of splenda lots of ice in a glass and YUMMMMMMM

this is so good I want it for dinner tonight

I make the same salad with some fresh seafood in it I just cook 1/4 lb each and leave them whole for a Thai seafood salad scallops, prawns and calamari then toss into the salad with some fresh ripe tomatoes and leave off the peanuts .....

chopped up cooked pork is to die for in this as well ..actually any type of meat you like chopped or left in chunks is great!!!

            HI there Binsk!

it is absolutely perfect for a summer salad and you can do whatever you like to it with whatever you have on hand ...sometimes I just use cabbage or just iceburg lettuce ....I love the whole seafood pieces the most however! with lots of really ripe tomatoes ....

the fish sauce has to be a good brand because if it isnt I believe the salad is ruined...you can ask at your favorite Thai or Vietnamese place what brand they use .....I have tasted many many kinds by the spoonful to see if they vary ..and it gets obvious what ones are bad and what ones are good when you can do this....I think folks get turned off at the idea because can be kind of gross and ..well ... too fishy smelling/tasting over powers food..but this one is I think what fish sauce is mean't to taste like.it is subtle and very balanced in its fermetation...it blends with foods instead of announcing itself!!! does that make sense? ..Phu Quok you can google it ..I believe the history of it is posted on the internet it is the only fish sauce I use anymore ...it runs about $2 for a large bottle at my local Southeast Asian market ....great price imho!
