  • Fat sources not dairy, egg or nut

    OK, I have 2 boys. 1 year old and 4 year old. They are not on Atkins per se, but I really want to limit better their white flour and sugar consumption.

    They seem to get hungry very fast, and I'm convinced it's blood sugar swings, not actual hunger, esp when they have sandwhiches or crackers. Where can I add some fat in their diets to keep them full longer?

    Oh, yeah, the important variable is that they are ALLERGIC to all eggs, nuts and dairy. The only fat source I could come up with is meat and sunflower butter.

    Any thoughts?

    Avocados are fatty little fruits. The fattiest of the fruits, if I remember correctly.
    I hate that they are allergic to all of those things!! How hard is that to deal with? Will they grow out of it?

      Vegetable oils, like olive oil, avocado oil, etc.

      You'll have to look around but there are vegan mayonnaises; but read those labels carefully.

      For the oils, you can infuse them with herbs and such and use as oil dips for veggies, fruit, etc. For example, if they can eat mustard, you can thin the mustard into a dip with the oil and maybe some honey for a honey-mustard type thing.

      To infuse an oil, heat the oil in a large pot. When you being to see the oil just start to swirl, remove from the heat and add whatever herb/spice you want. Cover the pot and allow it to sit undisturbed until the oil is cool. Strain out the solids and you have a homemade infused oil. (Make extra if you want for holiday gifts)

      I use these flavored oils as sauces for meats. I just lightly coat a piece of cooked meat with it. They add a great deal of flavor. They're also great for salads: when I use them, I just pour a tablespoon or two on the salad, toss, until every leaf is coated, then add a squirt of lemon or lime juice if needed.

      When carby people come to visit I set out a small bowl of the flavored oil and use it as dip for veggies and bread.

      You might also want to talk to their doctor. The current trend in food allergies and children (or anyone for that matter) is to slowly re-introduce the foods so that they develop a tolerance. The 'complete avoidance' mentality is out the window.

        Avocados are a great idea. Or avocado spread.

        I wonder about a (Ick to even type it) mayo based fruit dip? They love fruit, and Atkins suggests a fruit w/fat to keep the glycemic impact lower. Good thought.

        They love soy yogurt. That might be enough fat to help as a fruit dip too?

        Dipping the bread or cracker in an flavored oil sounds good, if I could found something to appeal to them.

        Momma, most kids (75-80%) outgrow the milk or egg allergy by school age. The percentage drops significantly if they are allergic to peanut AND milk and/or egg. The peanut allergy is almost never "outgrown". Their doctor and father and I have opted to treat them homeopathically rather than wait and see. We will be slowly re-introducing foods after their treatments, not to develop a tolerance (which is a valid philosophy for sure, but not what we are doing) but to test reactions in a controlled environment. My first sons reactions were dramatic, sudden and life threatening. My second demonstrates the same sensitivites, I just know better the early signs this time so have opted to feed them the same way for now. Hopefully by complete avoidance and homeopathic treatment at this point, we won't have to go through those scary reactions w/Benji.

        Meg, if you have some links you could refer me to on that, I would very much appreciate it. I research (and read labels LOL...sugar label reading was SO easy compared to dairy label reading!) extensively and really haven't found anything definitive on immunotherapy being more widely accepted currently. The medical community does go in waves, that USED to be the thinking in the late 70's too...but peanut allergies, environmental allergies and food allergies continued to rise at alarming rates, raising the genetic question which NOBODY can answer.

        Whhoo, sorry that got so long winded. If you have some recent stuff, I would love to see it if you have time.

          how abuot roasting some veggies like eggplant and then pureeing it with some olive oil? I do it with garli and serve it to non lowcarbers with veggies
          you can also do it with bean like fava,kidney and redbeans.

          How about some punpkin if they like the pie with some bland tasting oil mixed in maybe the soy yogurt and pie spice I love that on pancakes and even on fingure but I use cream cheese.

          there is an australian mix of veggies like our pb maybe you can make and they do make soy nut butter like peanutbutter but that might expose them to a soy allergy too
          Are they actually allergic to milk proteins or lactose intolerant?

            You weren't long winded at all!! I found it very interesting. I have just started introducing peanut butter to Ryder, my 22 month old. He has not has any rashes or indigestion yet, so I am crossing my fingers. He took to eggs, especially scrambled, like a duck to water.

            Is it all nuts? I know you can get that Nutello, hazel nut butter in most grocers now.
            As for a mayo dip for fruit, I had a mayo based dip once that was sweetened and then mixed with horseradish for fried mushrooms. But the sweetened mayo wasn't bad at all. Of course you would have to use the egg free like Megs said.
            Do they like hummus? Like 2big said? bean spreads made with olive oil. I had a black eyed pea hummus once that was pretty tastey. I will be brain stormin' for ya! Maybe make a chick pea hummus and sweeten it with honey and fatten it with olive oil. Kids will eat anything sometimes!! My mom always made our peanut butter and banana sandwiches with mayo and that's what I grew up eating. I was a teen before I found out no one else did it! LOL They thought I was weird. But I wouldn't be able to have one without it now. (not that I am eating those now, but you know what I mean!!)

              Oooh, I knew I'd come to the right place! 2big, Nicky is confirmed via blood test severely allergic to casein, the protein in milk. Thank you for recognizing the difference. Momma, Nicky is confirmed allergic to peanuts, we don't know the degree, he's never had a reaction, he's never had them at all actually. After the 3rd anaphylactic (respiratory passages swelling) episode, we blood tested for the most common allergies and identified egg, peanut and milk. Now, he must have had peanut somewhere along the line, even a trace, because if he truly never had, it would be impossible to have a true allergy. But, because of the genetics (DH has the same reactions to shellfish) and the degree of reactions, we totally avoid all nuts. Also w/Benji. My only evidence of his "allergies" is the mild reactions he had to my breast milk that cleared up days after eliminating dairy from my diet. But those reactions are enough for me to treat him as allergic for now.

              Back to the food. I love the idea of roasting veggies and adding oil and spices. That's AWESOME. They love banana bread too, I make it with virtually no added sugar and that's got plenty of fat. Hummus is also a great idea, they love sunbutter too. Soy butter has not been as widely available, but they do like it. fortunately NOT allergic to soy or wheat. They love their whole grain breads, they love soft meats (like slow cooked), fruits, soy yogurts and puddings, ww tortillas, Benji loves most veggies. Just working a bit of oil along might even help.

                I know absolutely nothing about allergies, but when you said fruit and yogurt I thought smoothies. Easy snack can add anything to it wether it be a bit of sunflower butter, fruit, veggies, do they make a protein powder safe for your kids? I'm always sneaking in extra protein for my 4y, seems every 30 minutes hes hungry LOL.

                  I was doing a bit of searching, http://www.veganchef.com/ had some interesting stuff. Granola type bars, some bran muffins. Didn't we have people adding tofu to smoothies for added protein here someplace?

                    You can add tofu to make smoothies or mayo, but soybean allergy is one of the top 7 childhood allergies, nowadays----probably due to all the covert soy products in many prepared foods.

                    Mom, look for "vegan" products. They typically are dairy free and animal protein free.

                      If your kids aren't allergic to all nuts, try almond butter as a veggie or fruit dip or sandwich option. It's like peanut butter, but not as sweet, with a richer flavor. It has less sugar, more fiber, and more fat than peanut butter. And it tastes good too!

                        Thank you all so much. We are safe with soy, they have been on soy milk or formula for years. I'm not too concerned about the amount of protein, they eat a fair amount of meat and the soy products cover that too. More looking for fat, to keep them from needing to eat every seven seconds You guys have given me some great ideas, thank you.

                        LOL at the hummus experiment though. Glad I like it
