  • Can you freeze heavy whipping cream?

I may have goofed. I got a fantastic deal on heavy whipping cream today. The quart size for $1.79...they were about to go out of date..( on the 15th) And they marked them WAY down. the quart size is $4.79 reg price.
I bought 3 of them. It was too good a deal to pass up.

I was wondering can it be frozen and reused with good results after thawing??? Otherwise I have too much heavy whipping cream....rofl

      Thanks feemia,

I am worried that it will seperate as it thaws.... But gosh what a deal. That stuff has gone up sky high... I just couldn't pass it up.
Hope someone knows for sure.. But if not.. then I'm popping it in the freezer and taking my chances...

I would think so--you can make ice cream out of it. Then again, I have made some screw-ups in the kitchen, but that's how you learn, right? :yes

          Q. Can you freeze whipping cream and heavy whipping cream?
          A. Yes. But then you cannot whip them once they thaw. You can blend them, cook with them, bathe in them, but they will not whip.
          I found this on ochef.com in the Q & A section.

I've frozen it when. like you, I found it at a terrific price when it was close to date. I didn't try to whip it, but I used it for cooking and on my flax cereal. It did separate some, but I just shake it up and it's fine.

Heavy cream, because of it's high fat content, will last for months past the sell date when refrigerated. It may clump up a bit, but a quick shake will resolve that.

Freezing milk/milk products is a crap shoot. Sometimes it's okay, but there's a good chance it will be impaired when thawed. Cream takes forever to go bad. Just leave it in the fridge.

And this is for the only cream worth buying, the non ultra pasteurized stuff. The horrible tasting overcooked ultra pasteurized cream has a shelf life of uranium.

Putting a sell by date on cream is a little like the sell by date on yogurt. The stuff never goes bad.

                Thanks everyone..

I was a little worried because I bought so much. I will leave 1 in the fridge and freeze the others. I don't really use it for much but thought maybe I could make something legal for Thanksgiving with it...

Well, I never toss yogurt, sour cream, cream or half and half til way way after the date on it, unless it starts changing color to something like green! eww

                              Creme de la cream

What a coincidence... The quart of cream I have in my fridge at this moment was once frozen! The carton bulged out, and when I thawed it in the refridgerator, it remained quite thick, kind of like a milkshake, but it tasted fine and is actually easier to measure in this state! haha It is getting a little clumpy though.

I have had cream go bad since I don't use it that much. It can get sour, but it takes much longer than milk does to be sure. Less sugar for bacteria to enjoy, I assume. hehe
