  • What can I grow?

Lately I've been thinking about making a small garden in my very small back yard. I'd like to grow veggies and berries maybe.

Problem is, I live in Florida. I have no idea what I can or cannot grow here, or even when a good time to plant is. Any clues? Any websites or books I should check out?

    MissPhode,

It's time to plant Strawberries!!!! Yum. You can also do greens (collards, turnips, mustards), broccoli, cauliflower...all of those look pretty in a garden too. Cabbage, green and red. If you can cover your little garden when it does get cold....you could probably still get away with zucchini, summer squash, cucumber too. I saw a really cute idea for those climbing style veggies....put them in a pot or planter and tie strings up to your porch railing or even your roof overhang. Then the vine can grow up the string.

Check this out...it has a list of warm season veggies and cool season veggies. Plus what type of soil, and when to plant.

This one is container gardening: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/VH032

You'll need to do a couple of things...

First, go to a website like burpees and look up your growing "zone". That will give you an idea of what plants will grow (and what won't)

Typically, salad veggies like spinach, some lettuces, radishes, etc. will grow in almost any climate condition.

For berries, you'll have to check out your climate zone.

Thanks Megs and Joy! I'll check out those links and hopefully soon, I'll have my own little garden to brag about.

            MissPhode,

When I lived in the Venice area, I planted bell peppers in the fall and they did great. They won't wilt from the heat and you don't have to water as often because it is cooler (well, if you call 80-85 degrees cooler). I also grew basil, oregano, thyme and various herbs. But peppers were the only veg. Good luck!
