  • Buffalo Burger

I had my first home made buffalo burger, the meat was on the "getting old, need to sell rack at the grocery store. Actually it was really pretty good and I like the idea that its grass fed not grain fed.

Buffalo is awesome! It's so lean, and oh so tasty. My bf and I want to try buffalo steak...so far we've had buffalo burgers, buffalo brats and buffalo sausage--all delicious.

      Re: Buffalo Burger

I can only get buffalo whenever I go to Native American powwows or to the National Musuem of the American Indian. The cafe there is very Atkins friendly: buffalo burger, planked salmon, green salads.

Anyhow, I went there about 2 weeks ago and I had the wine braised buffalo---delish!

oh man I LOVE buffalo burgers. This weekend it was burgers with spicy cheese, shrooms, onions on revolution rolls. dear lord they are good eats!

Megs, where is this cafe you speak of? Also, you can find it typically in a whole foods, wild oats, trader joes type store. or even at your local butchers on occasion (Id call first to ask if they slaughter buffalo though)

          Re: Buffalo Burger

It's the cafe at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington DC. If you're ever in DC. I recommend that place. The menu is based on native American food. You get real food there: planked salmon, roast duck breast, the buffalo, and veggies. The menu is also seasonally based, so some foods are only offered during the appropriate season. The first time I went there was a couple of Spring's ago. I had a really nice summer squash soup, a buffalo burger, and a green salad with smoked salmon tossed into it. This time around, I had butternut squash soup and the braised buffalo. I was debating on getting the side salad of celery root, cabbage, and hot-smoked salmon. But it was cold outside(!) so I opted for soup.

The other good cafe in the Smithsonian museums is the one in the National Gallery of Art. They have nice green salads and some kind of roast meat. Over the summer, I went there and had roast lamb(!) with a green salad.

These cafes beat the hotdog stands in terms of food. Everything's so terribly over-priced there (because it's a tourist trap!). So you can end up paying $8. 50 for a hotdog, bag of chips and a soda (and if you're on Atkins that means you paid $8.50 for a hotdog!) I figure if you're going to drop that kind of money, you might as well spend an extra $4.00 and have real meat and real veg!

I have still never tried them. I see the meat all the time at the Grocery store. But you know, we like the high fat burger so I'm wondering if I'll even like buffalo since its low in fat?

I've seen ground buffalo in 1lb packs, but the price was horrendous!! To me, I figured it is really beefalo and wouldn't be much different than ground beefsteak. Do you think it tastes particulary different, other than being leaner than beef?

                    Re: Buffalo Burger

It's got a richer taste, definitely different from beef. It's leaner, and I think it actually tastes a bit sweet. BUT I didn't buy mine in a supermarket (yukko)--I bought it at a place that's a store for an actual buffalo ranch. They sold everything there...and you can have stuff shipped (but THAT is a horrendous cost!). It was from Wyoming.
