  • Silcon Bakeware

Heidi's recipe for marshmallows (http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...181#post565181) Got me thinking about silcon bakeware.

I bought silcon muffin tin liners---regular size and mini-muffin size---because they were on sale and I figured I could use them for something one day.

Does anyone use the silcon bakeware and how does it work for you?

    Re: Silcon Bakeware

Do you mean silicone bakeware, or is there a specific brand called silcon?

I have a bread pan that I used to use a lot--for bread, lasagna, etc. I have a silicone mat that is a FABULOUS work surface and some silicone spatulas and spoons. The BEST BEST BEST thing to buy are silicone oven mitts--they're safe up to like, 600 degrees. I use them for everything...heck you can lift foil packets off the grill no problems, move oven racks, hold trays while you're taking cookies off, etc. I know you can do those things with regular mitts, but you feel absolutely no heat or discomfort with these babies on! They are well worth the $18 price tag for each mitt!

Oops, I'm a bad speller today.

      I mean that silicone stuff.

I have Silpat sheets---the French brand of the silcone mats---but I'm not too impressed with them. Food still sticks and they have developed a sticky feel to them, eventhough I clean and dry them thoroughly.

        Re: Silcon Bakeware

I've never used the silicon bakeware like a cake pan or anything. Them being flexible just makes me think they'll flop over while I'm trying to get them into the oven and spill everything, eek. I'd want to put a metal cookie sheet under it, but then I don't know if they'd melt or fuse or anything, so I'm still wary of those suckers.

Ayria--you just put it on a cookie sheet, and it's fine.

I had thought about buying those silpat mats, but bought the mat that's a work surface--has a guide for pie crusts (like I'll be using THAT) and other stuff...basically it's where you roll out your dough. I use parchment paper instead of those silpat mats...as long as you're not broiling anything, you're fine.

I like em fine for certain things...but yes, you do have to put them on a baking sheet or something firm.

So for the muffin tin liners I bought....if I want to use them for crustless quiches, do I still have to worry about the quiches sticking to them?

I'm with you NOt2Late, I bought a set of silicone bakeware and within a month of using them, they were all sticky and gross. Didn't matter how good I cleaned them. And once they started getting sticky, there was NO way you were getting any food off of them. I don't remember what brand they were, though. I have heard people who are really impressed with it, but my experience wasn't so great.

                  Re: Silcon Bakeware

I have them and do like them, but they're not as good as i was expecting. yes things will stick to them eventually..I use pam or butter them before i use them and they're fine. once they get dirty or browned theyr'e impossible to clean, but i find all bakeware like this. I've also found my loaf pan..the sides expand when there is a heavy batter in it..but i do like my muffin pans.

my biggest issue is i have a bad habit of touching them when they're hot LOL. for some reason my brain cannot comprehend that something that is green and looks like plastic could be 400 degress which gives me a bad habit of grabbing them without an oven mitt. eventually i guess i'll learn
