  • Low Carb Gardening 2007

It's that time of year again, folks!

My mailbox is getting a new seed catalogue almost daily. So I'll be looking them over and thinking what I want to plant this year.

I plan to do some good veggie eating this season!

Good point! I only just started growing last year so am quite excited though I have the smallest garden and can mainly only use containers!

I'm going to try spinach, rocket and lettuce.

    How about you?

      Re: Low Carb Gardening 2007

Spinach, rocket and lettuce do very well in a container or a small garden. My rocket (called arugula here in the States) gave me consisten crops throughout the spring and early summer. Then I replanted for a fall crop. Since it's been rather a warm winter, I'm still harvesting!

Herbs do well in containers. In fact, I only have 3 herbs planted directly into the ground. The rest are container growers! I love basil, flat-leaf parsley, rosemary, thyme, sage, dill, etc.

I'm thinking about trying some more 'edible flowers' this year, in addition to the nasturtiums and pinks.

Why not start now... winter seems to have lost interest in this region after killing off last year's tomatoes.

Already there are Leeks, onions, turnip greens and dandelions coming up. And it hasn't even snowed!!!

I have several pepper plants in pots in the house, and there are oyster mushrooms STILL in my favorite hiking woods!

Ah! I was wondering what rocket would be on fitday! Thanks for the info.

Edible flowers sounds great, as only practical stuff gets room in my garden - I wonder how they work out carb-wise?

I'm a terrible gardiner but I do try, Last year my kale did amazing, as did my rhubarb and celery. For some reason i had great success with zucchini the year before but last year they all rotted on me (didn't over water them either). I also had cabbage do well but the squirrels got to it before i could

It's been so warm here I could almost start a garden now LOL. All of the trees and bushes here are starting to bud. And some animals coming out of hibernation (which apparently is not good). It's unheard of for anything to be budding in early january in Toronto. We usually don't see any activity on the lilca bush until late may early june!

            Its quite scary actually.

                  Re: Low Carb Gardening 2007

Speaking of an indoor-winter garden, I was tempted to buy one of those Chia Pet herb gardens. The kit contained 4 clay pots, growing medium, and seeds. The only problem with an indoor garden is my housemate. He's a 4 year old tabby cat who likes to chew on plants. I grow oat grass for him and he devours it as soon as the grass is an inch high. I'm afraid if I grow indoor herbs, he'll devour them and let me have the oat grass!!! lol

Megs I've seen little window greenhouses in some stores..maybe you could try one of those...unless he can figure out how to get it open, which...knowing how smart cats can be, i wouldn't doubt

The only plant in myhouse is a small english lavendar plant i had outside in a pot int eh summer. i've had it since last may and it' hasn't grown an inch LOL. though considering how bad i am with plants i'm just happy it's alvie

This guy managed to open the refrigerator once. Walked over to it, put his paw beneath the door and wrenched it open. Granted I don't think the frig was closed all the way, but I like to tell myself that. Freaks me out that he knows how to use the tv remote too. lol

Anyhow, Boonie, snow peas do very well in my garden. I'm about 50 or so miles south of you and I've have plenty of success with snow peas for spring and fall planting.

How soon do you plant the snowpeas, Megs? It's been so warm here, I'm tempted to start now; Annapolis has a sort of microclimate similar to the typical mid-NC weather. But we may still have winter coming, and I've started too early before and thing just never came up, rotted in wet soil or got eaten by squirrels.

You could grow an herb garden in a wire critter cage. (I keep mice in 2 of them, and the cat doesn't get them!) It would be tough for a cat to invade that, and you could water and pick more easily than a mini-greenhouse.

I'm in the Charles County-St. Mary's County area. So I usually plant around April. But with this winter...who knows?

Nice to hear about everyone's veggie gardens!

My winter one isn't doing badly. Am eating home grown spinach, fennel, radicchio, escarole, chicory and what they call "broccoli Calabresi" here (they're similar to cauliflower but green... not shaped like cauliflower though... the 'flower' part is cone shaped). Do you get those across the pond?

Herbs are pretty dull right now but still have lingering basil, parsley, sage and chives.

Here they're saying it's been the warmest winter ever recorded, so far!

I've heard of it. They call it something like "broccoflower". I don't have any luck with broccoli or cauliflower. The most I can grow is broccoli rabe (and I'm not complaining because that stuff is EXPENSIVE, but more importantly I like it!)

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I thought Atkins was a very doable diet for me because of the foods list, including the veggie lists. If I had to live only on iceberg lettuce for this diet, I don't think I would have tried it.
