I would like to start a conversation on coconut oil.

I have recently been reading about some amazing benefits it might have, including helping with thyroid problems and helping with speeding up weightloss.

Now, of course I am skeptical of things I read on the internet so I was wondering if anyone else had experience with coconut oil.

I bought some the other day and have been using it daily, I must admit that I love the taste it leaves my food!

Alot of Southeast Asian cookery uses coconut oil. Frying, sauteeing, etc.

The bad rap comes from studies that fed hydrogenated coconut oil to lab animals---and you can guess what they found.

It does double duty because you can use it as a body cream and hair conditioner as well.

One of the cheaper, less processed forms of coconut oil is canned coconut milk boiled until it separates.

I agree with using it on your hair and skin but I learned a while ago not to argue using it as food on this board just like I have learned not to argue yeast being the cause of all human problems! I have read a lot about coconut oil and keep it by the gallon in my house for our dry skin ...but as far as a food group goes it is a saturated fat and I still do not agree it is good for you...I do not see any harm in using small quantities but just becuase it is used in Asian culture does not mean it is good for you....as you know noodles and rice are also used in Asian culture and they do not seem to be that great for our bodies either!...Like any fat we eat the percentage fat based on our total intake ....if you want to add it go for it but be aware there are much more "healthy" fats ....and since this WOE is limited in many areas every food we put in to our mouth should be good for us and not hear say good!....good luck with trying it if you want but I would read more and make my choices based on long term studies of people in our part of the world eating it in combo with our diet instead of Asian cultures eating it with their diet!

I edited this because it sounded a harsh in retrospect and I am sorry sometimes things do not come out in print the way you intend them!...enjoy the coconut oil

I seem to lose the most weight during the times when I'm cooking with coconut oil.

Hum...anyone else try coconut oil for any length of time?

I saw some at Wal-Mart and was curious about it.

                      Re: coconut oil

I've used it pretty regularily (haven't lately, only cause i ran out and haven't got around to buying more). I find it tasteless, no noticeable benefits though i hear it's very good for you. I used an organic one.

I also use it as a moisturizer. I buy a cheap brand for that..it's great for dry skin (though very oily).
