  • Stuffed Burgers

I love stuffed burgers. If I don't grill or pan fry them, I bake them in the oven sorta like stuffed meatloaves.

The almost foolproof way I've found for stuffing burgers without the filling oozing out is this: Divide the ground meat into 1 burger portions. Divide each portion in half. Flatten one half into a patty, and build a slight rim on the edge. Put the filling on the rimmed patty. Then flat out the other half. Place on top of the filled patty. Press the edges together to seal. And there you have it: a stuffed burger.

    I like simple stuffings:

    Cheddar cheese + chopped jalapenos
Parmesan cheese + sliced sun-dried tomatoes + basil leaves
    Swiss cheese + minced ham
    Swiss cheese + drained sauerkraut
Ricotta cheese + drained chopped spinach

    Any other stuffed burger fans?

Yeah, the sauerkraut one is almost like a ruben sandwich.

I also like to use tomato salsa as a stuffing, but you have to let it sit in a colander to allow the extra juices to drain away...otherwise, you'll have a really watery burger.

            Or a pepperjack and cheddar?

Peanut butter is good with......green pimento stuffed olives. No joke! If I want a mid-afternoon snack I make and open faced sandwich on a rye cracker with the peanutbutter and halfed green olives--yummy!

Ohh, I like the idea of the pork.

Mix in just a little bit of sage sausage with the pork and stuff with
Chayote Squash cooked with cinnamon and splenda.

I am *SO* making that sometime this week.

                Thanks, Megs.

                  Re: Stuffed Burgers

Pork is one of the meats that go well with fruit. And since the amount of fruit on OWL is sort of small (depending on the fruit), putting them in meat sauces or into meat dishes is a great way to use that fruit allowance.

So pork with apples, with pears, with peaches or apricots, with pineapple or mango, are all good. With the apples, I bet if you flavor the pork with sausage spices (fennel, marjoram, sage, etc.) it would be fabulous...similar to that sausage-apple stuffing some people make for their turkeys.

A Thanksgiving turkey burger would be great too: flavor the ground turkey with 'bread stuffing' herbs and spices, then stuff it with chopped cranberries!

                    Re: Stuffed Burgers

I've done them as pizza burgers, with mozerella, peppers, pepperoni and a bit of tomato sauce.

I've got ground beef thawing out today, i may have to pick one of these to make tonight for dinner!

Thanks for the dinner ideas! I'm opting for the parmesan/sun-dried tomatoes/basil. Well... where I am, these are standard "always-have-on-hand" ingredients! Yummmmm.... drooling already and it's only six o'clock! (we eat around 8.30 here).

I'm thinking mozzarella and bacon stuffed, for another night.... or fresh sage, ham and pine nuts... or maybe sauteed mushrooms and mozzarella....

                      Oh heavens!

Oh yes, Megs. The cranberry stuffed ground turkey burger sounds delish!

Another one with the pork could be an 'eggroll'--ground pork, stuffed with cabbage and bean sprouts and stuff that you put into a traditional eggroll.

Valid---that's a great idea! Flavor the pork with ginger and soy or make a simple soy-ginger dipping sauce for the burger---wow!

Do you think a stuffed burger would "survive" on a George Foreman style grill? Getting a lot of ideas from this thread.
