I'm trying to find a good photo. Here is a link to a video/slide show of what one looks like and how to prepare it.

How are you eating it, like an apple or do you cook it?

I just peel it and slice it like an apple.
I understand you can bake it, but really the crunch is what I love and it has a nice subtle sweet flavor....as a matter of fact, I just finished my snack bag of it now.

                  Thanks for the links.

So do you eat it raw? Or cook it?

I cant seem to find them here either, I have tried Krogers, Biggs and a couple other places..I am dying to try them. If they are anything like apples, I used to love to fry them in bacon grease with a little cinnamom mixed in.

I prefer it raw to cooked. I peel it and slice it and eat it. Yummy. I will chop into match sticks to put on a salad too.

I've found mine at Walmart Super Center. Check specialty markets...and perhaps ask your grocer if they can order it for you.

Salad of Jicama, Orange, Onion and Pepper

                        7 ounces jicama, peeled
1 navel orange, peel and all pith removed
                        1/2 cup diced red onion
1 medium red bell pepper, cut in 1/2 inch squares
                        3/4 teaspoon ground chili pepper
                        1/4 teaspoon salt
                        2 tablespoons cider vinegar
                        2 tablespoons oil

Cut jicama into 1/4 inch dice. Cut orange in cubes about the same size; mix in bowl with jicama, onion and pepper. Blend chili pepper, salt and vinegar; add oil and mix. Pour over salad and toss. Cover and refrigerate for one hour or longer.
                        Serves 3.

                            Re: Jicama

Angel i have a VERY hard time finding it in Toronto, at the moment I can't find it at all. The last few times I hae found it it's been rotten (fine on the outside, but when i got it hom brown on the inside..at $1.99/lb!). I know it's grown in California/Mexico so I wonder if maybe it doesn't travel/export well? I'd be really curious to see if you do find it in the UK..

that said I have tried it and miss it teribly! I love it just dipped in some natural peanut butter, or with some lemon juice on it with sweetener and cinnamon.

I have never found it in Belgium. My dh who used to work as a fruit/veggie importer/exporter never heard of it it either. Of course in the UK you probably get more then we do in little Belgium. *sniff*

I um wonder how difficult it would be to grow. I might have to order some seeds from the states if that would be possible.
