I actually use the "off-brand" butter...the store brand, because that's what's cheapest. The butter is located next to the margarine sticks. Brand can also be region-specific, so I can't really help you there...
I moved this out of the "Main Dishes" forum because the recipe forums are only for recipes, not ingredient discussions.
you'll find butter in the butter/margarine section of the supermarket. In my supermarkets, butter is at the bottom of the refrigerator case. It doesn't come in tubs/plastic containers. It typically comes in rectangular boxes--shaped like bricks.
There are a number of butter brands, Land o Lakes, Breakstone, Horizon, Kerry Gold, Pugra, and the store brands.
Generally, unsalted butter is for cooking. Salted butter is for spreading on bread. I typically buy unsalted butter because 1. it tastes better, 2. the salted butters are sometimes a bit rancid because the salt masks the flavor and preserves it better, and 3. the amount of salt in salted butter varies and I like to control my salt intake, in general.
I use Kerry Gold. I was amazed that I found it when I went to Florida! Stupidly I thought it was just an English product.
