I was wondering if anyone has and would recommend the purchase of a salad spinner? Or are they a bit pointless gadgety?

I seem to spend half my life standing next to the sink shaking a colander

I got one, it's great! Who wants watery lettuce after washing to put dressing on...plus, it's lots of fun if you've got kids or whatever!

I love mine! It will make your lettuces last a lot longer too. That plus its great for removing the water after steaming cauliflower and or broccoli!

The only thing I don't like about mine is that it is a space hog in the fridge. As for function, it works great!

I'm really glad you asked this question, because I was thinking about getting one too. I just found out yesterday that you should wash your lettuce. I thought it was washed before packaging.

              Re: Salad spinner

Love mine, love love LOVE it! I use it all of the time, and will forever be grateful to the woman standing next to me while I was choosing one who insisted I get the large one. I was thinking that since it's just me, the small would suffice. Lemme tellya, a bunch of kale will definitely fill up a large spinner!

I also use mine to spin the grease off of ground beef....

It's one kitchen gadget purchase that I have never regretted.

I love mine too...except that it's a bore to wash... all the bits of lettuce get stuck in the top rim!

But... re washing lettuce... here, if you buy the packaged lettuce, it's pre-washed. If you buy whole lettuces you have to wash it yourself, but it's way cheaper.

Sounds to me like you are washing away extra nutrients and protein not normally found in lettuce!

                      What a shame.

True, though some occasionally manage to cling to the leaves

                          Re: Salad spinner

I have a salad spinner and I like it. It's good to 'dry' non-lettuce fresh vegetables and fruits (yes, I wash all my fresh vegetables and fruits, regardless of what the packaging says.)

Just make sure your spinner has 2 things:
                          1. A plunger spinning mechanism. I had a spinner in which you pulled a string. It works...until the string breaks.
                          2. A removeable basket. Some spinners have you spin the veg over a sink. I like the ones with the removeable basket because you can use the basket as a colander and you can use the spinner bowl as a bowl.
