  • PEANUT BUTTER FDA Advisory

Hi - I was just made aware of this and wanted to share.

An FDA alert regarding 2 popular brands of peanut butter and a possible connection to recent cases of salmonella was issued yesterday. The brands are Peter Pan and Great Value (wal-mart brand) made by ConAgra - the lids of the potentially dangerous jars will have a number stamped on them beginning with 2111. Consumers are advised to discard any jars with that number. Here's a link the FDA news release.

While I know that those of us following Atkins aren't eating this, our family members may be - I know that my children do and were - and we had 2 of the potentially affected jars in our pantry.

We had a jar of Peter Pan Sugar Free Peanut Butter at our place with those numbers, Kroger is replacing it, might not hurt to call the store you bought it from .

Update: ConAgra will be making this right for consumers. Here's the link. You can send the lids in and get a "refund" although I am not sure exactly what that means...maybe a coupon or voucher for a replacement.

Are you going by the UPC code for the number? I have both of those brands here.

I got the answer to my question from that last link. Thanks Kylie! Both jars begin with those numbers.

                Re: PEANUT BUTTER FDA Advisory

So far, everyone I have spoken to or emailed with that had either brand had those numbers - so I think it must be everything made at a particular location - because otherwise it would seem odd that not one person has a jar with a different first 4 numbers. At least they are going to compensate consumers. Earlier, it was only "discard it" with no indication of the refund.

                  Re: PEANUT BUTTER FDA Advisory

I took mine into the base commissary along with the FDA letter and they refunded my money. They had also removed all the peter pan peanut butter from the shelves and I asked them to post a copy of the letter on the shelf so that people don't think that it is just out of stock. After all, If I bought mine there, Im sure other people did as well.
