Re: alcoholic beverages
Water<----water goes with all foods.Originally posted by AllieRichieWhat is yoru Low Carb Beverage of Choice???
During OWL Phase, Pre-Maintenance and Maintenance phases, alcoholic beverages are allowed. But I seldom drink a drink and when I do, it's usually as part of a meal. So it depends on what I'm eating. For example, I wouldn't waste my time drinking a Merlot while eating guacamole with jicama, just because I like Merlot. No way...I'd rather eat and drink something that complement each other, but that's just me.
However, I do use alcohol (wine, beer and hard liquors) in cooking. It imparts a nice flavor and I don't need to add such a huge amount that it will totally screw up the carb count for a serving. And I don't have to worry about eating so much alcohol that I'll stop burning carbs, protein and fat while my body burns off the alcohol.~Megs~

Re: alcoholic beverages
I drink very rarely now, 1) my tolerance is much lower, and 2) my tastes have changed. After drinking water constantly, a serving of alcohol is a real shock to the palate! I do enjoy an occasional glass of wine with a nice meal (though I can rarely finish the glass of wine) and if I go out to a bar (once in a blue moon) I'll order a whiskey and soda.START 8/16/06 @ 270+~MG1: 220-12/2/06~MG2: 210-1/07~MG3: 199-3/2/07~MG4: 190-4/27/07~MG5: 180-7/04/07~GOAL: 170

Re: alcoholic beverages
I hardly drink myself, but when I hit the alcohol rung my favorite was vanilla smirnoff vodka with diet coke. I do enjoy a glass of wine on special occasions, usually with a meal.
My husband is a beer drinker and I think he gets Michelob Ultra, beer tends to effect me differently then vodka or wine so I try to stay away from it.

Re: alcoholic beverages
A nice glass of red wine.
I like gin and tonic too, but can't get slimline tonic here in Italy, so I stick to the wine when I want a drink. Before and after:

Re: alcoholic beverages
well, since I finished induction, and starting on rung 1 again, no alcohol, however, I'm a sucker and always have been for one thing.....Jack Daniels on the Rocks, interesting, it is possible that this through me into my tail spin, going skip the alcohol rung this time. Besides, it's way too expensive. So......
Water or a Don Corleone special (Club Soda on the Rocks) yup, Mikey Corleone was a diabetic, so he drank club soda...

Re: alcoholic beverages
I used to be a rum and diet Coke drinker, for some reason since low carbing i can't tolerate rum, hits me too fast or something...so I'm now a Vodka/Diet Coke drinker. Usually gets me strange looks at a bar, but it's really quite nice.
I also love gin or vodka and diet tonic, but there is only one grocery store here that sells it, and it's never avail in bars..so i don't drink it as often.
I also like Mike's Light Vodka coolers.
I do like white wine, but rarely drink it now because even just one glas makes me bloat tothe point that I can't get my rings off. not sure why. even my feet swell.
I used to be a hardcore beer drinker, that was my only drink of choice. I haven't had a beer in 2 yrs now! for some reason low carbing i completely lost the taste for beer.Jen, 39, F

Re: alcoholic beverages
I am a wine drinker. I mostly like dry white wines(they are lower in carbs too). Sometimes I will have a vodka with diet coke.Maggie(F) age 31

Re: alcoholic beverages
I love wine. I used to drink it every night, but now I drink it on the weekends. Red or white, doesnt matter to me as long as it goes with what I am eating. But then I dont have to be eating to enjoy wine. A dry white would be a Sauvignon Blanc (my fav), Chardonnay, Viognier, Pinot Grigio. But for me nothing beats a really nice Cabernet with a grilled rib-eye steak.
I think I am going to try the vanilla vodka and diet coke. That sounds kind of good. I used to love martini's but they kick my behind big time. I am also intrigued by the chocolate vodka and coffee. That sounds like a must try.

Re: alcoholic beverages
A dry wine is a wine that doesn't contain more than 4 grams of residual sugar per liter. But a dry wine can taste 'sweet' if the acidity is low and a 'sweet wine' can taste 'dry' if the alcohol level is high.
Frankly, I think 'sweet' wines like Sauternes or Tokaj are vastly underused and they go well with foods. They're not sugary 'sweet' like you're drinking Fruit Punch spiked with alcohol. But they have a fruitier taste, imo, so they go well with some meats and veggies. But then I also think the 'fortified' wines, like sherry and port, are underused too. Sherry goes great with spicy foods, fried foods, and nuts. Port goes well with cheese, chocolate, and fruit.~Megs~

Re: alcoholic beverages
A dry wine can mean two things...like you pointed out it can be sugar content. But mostly the term is used to describe the taste of the wine. I agree sweeter wines are not as well appreciated. I love a good guwertztraminer. They are wonderful with spicy foods. I find reislings too sweet for my taste. I am a huge fan of ports and sherry's but the sugar content is too high for this WOE. Another wonderful option of a wine in between is a rosé. They have a beautiful color but they are not sweet. Usually dry with a floral nose. Rosés are usually inexpensive too. They are a great to drink with a summer BBQ.
