  • Calling all Jicama Experts!!!

I bought some jicama and I was wondering how long it keeps once it is peeled and sliced? I was wondering if slicing a couple up (enough for a couple of days or all week) and keeping it in a storage container is okay or will they turn brown like an apple. Thanks

    Re: Calling all Jicama Experts!!!

It has never turned brown for me, I actually brought some in a baggie on a trip to boston with me once and they lasted a couple of days (refrigerated). I didn't have any problems with it discolouring.

Jicama is very hard to find here...boy do I miss it.

I cut it up and store it in plastic containers or ziploc bags in the fridge. It doesn't go bad...but then again it doesn't last very long in my house anyway LOL

Thanks Sadie and Joy, that's the only thing I was scared of. I didn't know if it would go bad really fast, so now that I know I will be buying quite a few at a time to slice up and keep on hand . This is the only other veggie besides cauliflower that I like to eat raw and I like to try and eat my veggies raw to have a crunch sometimes.

I don't store the whole unpeeled jicama in the refrigerator--it does better for me if I put it on the counter.

After it's peeled and sliced, I store it in the frig. It keeps about 5 days.

Same thing here. Unpeeled it last several days on the counter, but does atract mold...odd. But peeled it may make it 4 - 5 days, but usually doesn't last me more than 3. haha! Good stuff that Jicama.

I had one that started getting some mold on it too. I probably should have peeled it anyway but I threw it away. Might have wasted a perfectly good jicama.

                Re: Calling all Jicama Experts!!!

If it's a dry "mold" on the brown outside, you can peel it and go ahead and use it. If it's a watery decay...throw the whole thing out.

Okay..quick question. What is Jicama? Is it good? How do you prepare it? Are there recipes for it?

I love Jicama too and eat it now almost every day as a snack. Love the sweet, crunchy taste. I also wonder if it's o.k to eat it everyday and what's the max I could eat a day. Anyone know?

If it's available, I eat it every day, or every other day. Love the stuff. It's considered a 'salad' veggie, so 2 cups per day during induction. More on OWL.

Joy, how did I know you'd pop up in this thread?

I don't think there's a real "limit" on how much you can eat (obviously it's a salad veggie so if you're on induction, you'd be limited to 3 cups per day)...but your intestines might limit you. I can't even eat jicama anymore because my body hates it. Enjoy your jicama for me, if you can!
