  • When you're the only one who can eat it...?

I am getting to a point whwre (even on induction) I'd like to try some of the induction-friendly recipes and start experimenting with other recipes just to play around.

What do you do, however, when you're the only one in the household eating these things? Does the food go to waste?

Do you cut recipes in half?

Is there a rule for storing foods when you are the only one who is eating them? Freezing? Room temp, etc?

I always make the recipe, following it to the letter, the first time around. Afterwards, I'll cut it in half or double it as needed.

But in terms of storage, it depends on what the food is.

A veggie side dish, I'll portion it out and eat it over the week, or I'll freeze it.

For a baked good like muffins, pancakes, etc., I'll freeze the extra for quick meals/snacks.

    Meat dishes---refrigerate

    Soups---refrigerate or freeze

Do you live alone, or do the others in your household just refuse to eat it?

If it is the latter, just get them to sample, LC cooking can be just as tasty as regular cooking, no need to keep preparing two sets of meals .

If it is the former: I usually just stick it in the fridge, and keep eating off of it until it is gone. I hardly ever cook from recipes (I tend to use them as a general guide for flavor combos, not as a hard set of rules and quantities) so I suppose I tend to only cook up 2-4 portions of things at a time, but it is rare I cook something so big that it will go to waste sitting in the fridge before I can finish it off.

There are some really organized folks who buy micro/freezer/refrigerator friendly storage containers made specifically for storing individual meals. When they make a meal, they put a portion in their container, label it with the contents and the date, and freeze it. When they're pinched for time, they have a frozen dinner ready to heat and eat.

I'm not one of these organized people. :sadblinky

I was going to get one of those vacuum storage systems (in fact, had ordered it from HBC points) and had to return it because it was not functioning.

I was hoping to vacuum seal flax cereal (my combination of stuff) for when I have to go to Basic Training, just in case they didn't have anything I could eat.

Now, I'll have to go looking for it elsewhere.

I make things that the family won't eat.. I get those Ziploc or Gladware (or the generic brand) containers and put the leftovers in there and keep them in the fridge.. if I haven't used it by two days it goes in the freezer. I usually make an extra portion of whatever I'm making for dinner and take it for lunch the next day!

I'm wiht nurselady on this one, with a few exceptions:
                    1. I will sometimes bread my food separately. Or I will use "regular" breading, and just scrape it off of mine (Keto Italian crumbs are not bad, but not as good as the real thing!).
                    2. Potatoes/Pasta -- I will sometimes make a sidedish of these for the family. I have been using the DreamFields Frankenpasta, and they like that fine. Since I am quite leery of it, I only eat a couple of bites, if any.
                    3. Dessert -- We normally don't have anything in the house, but I will sometimes by both regular and LC ice cream.

It hasn't been that hard -- some big hunk of meat and vegetables. That's it. Maybe if you are used to casseroles, etc. , it would be difficult, buy DH has always referred to any type of casserole as "glop", so Atkins ends up not being that difficult to manage with my crew. Of course, if they don't like the dinner I make, they are welcome to make their own!

                      Thanks, guys!

I like cooking separately for my family and for myself (and much of the time for all of us). If the spinach-feta burgers are mine to not share then good for me!

                      muahahahahahaaaaaa!!!

I have one of those vac-seal machines and it's been a Godsend! I buy in bulk at Sam's, and come home and split things up to meal size. It's not just good for freezing meats, but also for things like pepperoni, those meat sticks, flax meal, flours, etc. Once they're sealed air tight you can just put things like flours in the cupboard and know they won't go bad. I don't do veggies, but do a LOT of meats. I'll buy a boneless pork roast, cut half of it into 1/2" chops, then cut some off for stir fry, then I usually have two small roasts left. $1.88 a pound vs $3.99 -$4.99!

                        Vac-sealer - don't leave home without it!

If you pick the right recipes, everyone in the house should love it. Just prepare one extra side like mashed potatoes, rice or corn just for them. For instance, you could do adobo with rice and a veggie like green beans. Just don't eat the rice.
