  • Ginger dressing at Japanese restaurants

Sorry if this is the wrong forum to post in, but I was hoping y'all could point me in the right direction!

My boyfriend Matt and I went to a sushi place last night, and my hibachi chicken (no noodles, no rice) came with a miso soup and a lettuce salad with ginger dressing. While I didn't think the miso would be dangerous for Atkins, I realized it was probably too salty and let Matt eat it. But then came the lettuce bowl with the ginger dressing, which I ABSOLUTELY LOVED.

Sadly, I came home and realized that the dressing could have had some sugar in it or something. So my questions are:

    1) Anyone know what is actually in the ginger dressing?
    2) Anyone have a good Atkins-friendly recipe to make it? (Induction, if possible) I would eat that stuff EVERY day.

Thanks, y'all! Have a great day.

Re: Ginger dressing at Japanese restaurants

I used to be a chef at a japanese restaurant with my mom and she made the dressing all the time. We put mirin(sweet wine i believe), sugar, vegetables- carrot, ginger, onion, and some other things. You would have to ask that restaurant tho because every japanese restaurant makes their own ginger dressing differently. I wouldnt use that dressing because most japanese dressings have some kind of sugar in it

Jamie is totally right about this. When I went on Atkins, a few low carbers used to say Japanese cuisine was "safer" than other Asian cuisines in terms of added sugars. But then I read a few Japanese cookbooks and found it wasn't "safer" at all!

My advice is to go to your local library and borrow books on Japanese cookery. Then you can substitute lower carb ingredients for the higher carb ones.
