  • Need a little help...

Ok, it's day 5 on induction and weight is coming off but, i noticed that the breakfast sausage i have been eating is cured with SUGAR! Even though is says 0g of sugar. Anyone know of any kind that isn't cured with sugar? Thanks in advanced for any help that i receive on this topic.

You'll have to read packages. I find in my supermarket the fresh sausages found in the meat section has either no added sugar or less added sugar than the ones in the "bacon" section.

Are you sure Janiac about the Bob Evans? I swear it had some sort of sugar content in the ingredients, I'll have to check it again. Thanks for your help.

Check and see if you have BOAR'S HEAD meats in your area. WONDERFUL stuff -- no sugars, no fillers. You can eat bologna! hot dogs! sausage! all lunch meats! 0 carbs. There's an 800# on their web site you can call and find out if a store near you carries it. Most major chain supermarkets do not, but often the smaller "deli" type stores do. Some of their cheeses are 0-1 carb per ounce too.

That's the one many people have suggested. I use it too. I don't recall seeing any sugar listed in the ingredients. Don't have any right now so I can't check it out for you. Anyway, it's the large tube, not individual links or patties.

Edited on Jan. 17... I have checked the labeling on the roll of Bob Evans Original Recipe sauasge: pork, fresh hams, pork tenderloins, water, salt, spices, monosodium glutamate.

              hey!

Hi, im new to this site and I didnt know where to post and I tried looking though but I was too eager to ask...and hopefully someone will answer me. On atkins, you get 20carbs a day...does that mean you count the carbs from vegetables and meat too? do you count the carbs from cheese or cottage cheese? If you want to have deli meat that has some sugar in it, is that wrong? I have done atkins before and lost 17lbs but I did it all wrong because I drank the shakes and ate the bars during induction and ate deli meat with sugar on it..and didnt count meat carbs. Is cottage cheese bad to eat during it as well? I used to also look at fast food nutrition facts online in case I was out with my friends and they got something, I would get a burger and take off everything on it....but grilled chicken from fast food places has at least 50carbs at each place, wendy's, burger king, mcdonalds...its crazy...so does that mean you cant have chicken with carbs? or? I need someone to point me in the right direction and this site is amazing....i get so much inspiration from it even though I didnt litterally read everything about what im supposed to do. Thank you for reading!!!

                Hi Jaymie!

Have you read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution(DANDR)? If not, get thee to a bookstore, my friend! And in the meantime, go to www.atkins.com and read about Induction there. This is no substitute for the book though, as the book gives the 'why' behind the plan.
On the main page, you'll see the first forum is the FAQ forum, and you'll find lots of answers to your questions there as well. But again, you really need to get the book so you can understand why you are limited in the first phase of Atkins.

You mention cottage cheese...that's not allowed during the Induction period, and that will all be explained when you do your research. I urge you to read up on this, and not do what you think is Atkins. In the FAQ section you'll find a list of the Acceptable Foods, and you can print it out, stick it on the fridge and refer to it whenever necessary. :yes

Yes, you will count the carbs from every single thing that you eat and here's some info on a site that will help you do that.
Get yourself a free account at www.fitday.com if you don't already have one and enter your foods there. The chart will show you how you are doing. Your goal is ideally 65%fat/30%protein/5%carbs, and it's ok if the numbers fluctuate a little bit. If you're following the plan as laid out in DANDR, they should naturally fall within those parameters.
It doesn't subtract the fiber from the carbs so you have to do that yourself in order to get your net carbs but that's as simple as a glance at the chart. If fiber isn't listed on the chart, look to the left and go into Goals. Set yourself a fiber goal (I put 5 min, 5 max, any number will do) and you'll see it appear on the chart.
Fitday is a great tool, and has tons of features, like a graph to plot your weight loss, a journal you can keep etc. Check it out!

Jaymie, I sense some anxiety. Take a deep breath. We're all here to help.

First and foremost I congratulate you on your decision to use the Atkins program. I love it.

You MUST read the 2002 edition of DANDR, Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. It's the book that all our advice is based upon. I'm happy to answer some of your quesitons, but the book is invaluable.

20 carbs per day is the maximum someone on Induction may consume. You count ALL carbs, regardless of origin. However, you may subtract dietary fiber gram from your total carb count, for net carbs. Example: 1 cup of broccoli has 5 grams of carbs. Subtract the dietary fiber, 3 grams, and you end up with 2 net carbs. 2 is what you would count for your daily carb allotment.

Cottage cheese is not permitted while on Induction. It can be added back into your diet when you reach the appropriate rung of the OWL (Ongoing Weight Loss) ladder. Hard cheeses, such as cheddar and swiss are limited. You may have 3-4 ounces of cheese per day. But some people find that too much will stall their weight loss. It's an individual thing so you will have to wait and see how the amount of cheese effects you.

Stay away from deli meats with sugar. I've heard that the Boar's Head brand doesn't have sugar.

Fast food meats most likely have some kind of coating on or fillers in them. That's where the carbs come from. That doens't mean you can't eat at fast food places, you just need to be well informed.

Until you can get the book, you can find tons of info here http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...02aaec25a97baa
Go through the list and read the FAQ's and Induction forums. then you can go through the others that suit your specific situation, if any.

The very bests of luck to you Jaymie. I hope to hear more from you soon.

I wonder if Boars head really is filler/sugar free! I always heard that but yesterday when I was at the deli getting the BF his lunch meat I was reading the boars head labels. Everyone I read had Dextrose and like the 3rd ingredient~! Have I gone mushy brained or isn't dextrose sugar?

OK, that's what I thought (so glad my brain isn't mush LOL) so maybe we should be careful about advising folks to look for Boar's head deli meats, I read a lot of labels yesterday and everyone of them had Dextrose in them and they were all Boar's Head!
