  • Sesame Seeds

Does anyone have any recipes using sesame seeds? I love them but don't know what to do with them other than sprinkle on my salad. I've seen recipes for chicken with sesame seeds and teriyaki sauce but since I've never had the teriyaki sauce I'm a little hesitant.

    Thanks.

Well, you'll never know if you will like something new until you try it, so give it a shot and see what you think.

Toasted sesame seeds are also great over Tuna steaks that are seared on the outside, rare inside, with a nice black pepper crust, a dash of soy-sauce and citrus, and maybe a squeeze of wasabi.

Sesame seeds rock!! They add a nice nutty flavour and some good crunch!

I like to coat chicken or pork in ranch dressing, or mayo and then roll them in grated parmesan and sesame seeds and then I bake them in the oven.

Another real favourite of ours is pork chops(you could use chicken breasts too) marinated all day in soy sauce, chopped garlic, thinly sliced ginger(you don't even need to peel it because you'll be tossing it) a splash of lemon juice and ground black pepper.
When ready to bake, take it out, and either sprinkle sesame seeds on both sides, or lay it in sesame seeds, depending on how much you like them, and bake at 400 for 45 mins.
      This is totally delicious!

In Dr Atkins Diet Cookbook, the companion cookbook to the 1972 diet, there are few recipes using sesame seeds. One of them is a cracker where you grind the seeds to a meal and add an egg and something else, the thing is spread on a cookie sheet and baked. I tried it, it wasn't bad, but I haven't gotten around to tinkering with that recipe. Another recipe is a tempura batter made from ground sesame seeds. I haven't tried that so I can't tell you if it works or not.

          Thanks guys for the replies.

Nullo, I think I will try the teriyaki and maybe the tuna.

Moochiecat, thanks for the recipe, I will be trying that this weekend.

Megs, I think I just might research that cracker!

I'll try to remember to dig up that book tonight and post the recipe for you. It used a whole egg, but I think it might be better if it just used the egg white.

oops, I made a mistake. The recipes are in DADR, not the cookbook.

              Tempura
              Serves 4

              3 tablespoons sesame seeds
              3 eggs
              2 tablespoons cottage cheese
10 shakes Krazy-Mixed-Up-Salt or seasoned salt

Place all the ingredients in a blender and run for 3 minutes.

total carbs for the batter = 9.2

The recipe goes on to say to dip 3/4 cup of vegetables like cauliflower, mushrooms and broccoli or seafood like fish fillets, scallops, shrimp into the batter and fry until golden brown.

              Cheese Crackers
              makes 20 crackers

              Pam spray
4 tablespoons Parmesan cheese or Romano cheese
              2 eggs
              2 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup sesame seeds crushed in a blender
              1 tablespoon heavy cream
              pinch of salt

Beat all ingredients until well blended. Spray Pam on a 10 inch square baking sish. Spread mixture thinly onm pan. Bake at 300 degrees F fpr 1/2 hour or until light brown. Cool and slice into twenty 10inch squares.

              total grams 14.2
grams per 1 square serving 0.7
I haven't tried the batter, but I have tried the crackers. I think if you just use egg whites you'll get a better cracker, but I haven't tried using only egg whites.

Hmm, cottage cheese is kind of carby, I wonder if that would work with Riccotta or Cream cheese instead...

It's only 2 tablespoons of cottage cheese. If you use ricotta, I would cut the amount by half since ricotta is more dense than cottage cheese.
