  • Pumpkin

Hi...I'm interested in making some recipes using pumpkin but I have no idea where I can find 100% pure pumpkin. I can find all kinds of pumpkin pie filling, but that is loaded with sugar.

BTW...I live in Canada and have checked two of my local health food stores to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Hey Strudel, I live in Quebec and I can get it at my local grocery stores...all of them...maybe you should ask your store manager!

      Re: Pumpkin

      Ok...thanks, appreciate the quick reply.

I mostly shop at Safeway but last time I looked they didn't have it. I have checked a few other grocery stores as well and no luck.

Where in the store did you find it...with the canned fruit...or baking?

Ever see it in Safeway in Quebec?

We don't have Safeway here...IGA, Loblaws, Provigo, Metro ...and it was in the baking section! Good luck!

          Re: Pumpkin

          Hi, Kathy

At my local grocery, the pure pumpkin and the pumpkin pie filling are right next to each other on the same shelf. In fact, they look so much alike that I have to read the label carefully to make sure I am picking up the right one. Mine is made by Libby's. Is it possible you overlooked it?

I can't imagine there being no pumpkin where you are. I would check again at your local grocery store and if you can't find it, definitely request the manager to get some. I eat pumpkin every day... I would be sad without it.

          Good luck in your quest.

Ditto what Mitzi said. It really does make you look to check that they're different than the pie filling.

              Re: Pumpkin

Most of the year it's usually by the canned fruit. Around Thanksgiving and christmas it's in every isle of the store

Thanks everyone...I'll check again and then ask the manager if I can't find it.

I think I will check Superstore next time I'm out in that part of town...its a really big grocery store here that has some things other stores don't have.

Again, thanks to you all for your replies.

                  Re: Pumpkin

If you like fresh pumpkin check with your local Japanese restaurant. They use it for tempura. You may be able to buy fresh pumpkin form them... Slice and bake with butter and s/p. Yummy..

Before october rolls around ask the produce manager to get some cooking pumpkins.. ( They have a different name.. sugar "something" pumpkins). The ones used for Jack-O-Lanterns aren't all that good to eat. Then slice them up and freeze them. I use one of those food sealers... it freezes very well that way. That way you'll have baked pumpkin all year long!
