  • Cookbooks - Recommended favorites

I'm an avid cookbook collector. I've done so for years. I convert old favorite recipe flavors to Atkins friendly menus since this is my WOL, now. I've picked up several low carb books in recent months. What are your favorites?

Mine are my favorites. Seriously though, I'm the same. I collect cookbooks - even non low-carb ones. I love reading them cover to cover. I have most of the low-carb cookbooks too. LOL

My favorite specifically low carb cookbook is Dana Carpender's 500 Low Carb Recipes . The Atkins' cookbooks are okay.

But my favorite "low carb" cookbooks are the regular ones, by James Beard, Craig Claibourne and Julia Child. Since they never really bought into the low fat craze, their books have pre-low fat recipes that can be used unaltered or slightly altered for a low carb lifestyle. Great stuff in there from creamed zucchini and turnips (shred the veg, sautee in butter or oil, then add heavy cream and cook until the veg absorbs the cream, salt and pepper to taste---simple) to fish or chicken quenelles (toss boneless fish fillets or chicken in food processor, add an egg white, process, then add a little heavy cream, salt and pepper or other herbs and seasonings. Refrigerate, form into balls or patties and poach or deep fry). And of course, they have recipes for meat: roasts, chops, etc.

Hmm, two that I have really enjoyed lately:

Paula Wolfert's Slow Medditerranean Kitchen and

Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything.

Neither is a LC book, but the Bittman is a huge volume that covers the basics for a wide array of cooking tasks, a great resource to have around. The Wolfert book has some recipes that are already low-carb, but many others that can pretty easily be altered to be. The Olive Oil poached salmon from that book is wonderful.

            Re: Cookbooks - Recommended favorites

I have a few low-carb cookbooks, but rarely use them. I use more of the recipes from DANDR than anything else (other than just experimenting myself).

I'd love to see if anyone else has some favorites.

Oh, I forgot about Linda's LC recipes on the internet. I go to that site and use some of those.

I also like Dana Carpender's 500 LC Recipes. She's come out with a 500 more LC recipes as well. I didn't like her slow cooker book as much, though. Instead of relying on premade recipes, I guess I mostly like to adapt and experiment from "regular" recipes.

                Cookbook recommendations?

What cookbooks does everyone recommend? I've got Dana Carpender's 500 more Low Carb Recipes and have gotten some really good recipes from that.

I'd like to get some more though...

                  Re: Cookbook recommendations?

I've gotten where I just do internet searchs when I need more recipes. I print them out and then stick them in a notebook! Its a lot cheaper and I can put in only the recipes that I've tried and like.

Actually, almost all of her books are great. Personally, I didn't care too much for the BBQ one, but I never liked sweet stuff on meat before I starting this WOL, so I wasn't especially interested in learning how to do that low-carb.

I don't have a George Stella book, but the recipes I've tried of his (from the website) were Awesome!
