  • Savin Bacon

Could someone tell this person who burns water.. what is the best way to cook bulk bacon -- in a pan or in the oven? And if in the oven could you tell me how is the best way to get even toned bacon?

Also, I have a food saver plus, is it better to put bacon in the freezer once its cooked or the fridge? I will be cooking enough for a week at a time.

    Thanks for your help.

The oven is good if you want to cook alot of bacon. The only way to get them evenly browned is to watch it and if needed, take the pan out periodically and re-arrange the strips.

If you're going to use up your bacon within a week, it'll probably be okay to store it in the refrigerator.

I cook my bacon two ways.

        1. In the microwave. We have one of those plastic tray things that has a drip tray with the three stands on it. I think it's called Makin Bacon? Anyway, you put the bacon on and nuke it for about 5-6 minutes.. depending on how well your microwave works. Believe it or not it comes out pretty good! I like this way because the whole thing goes in the dishwasher.

        2. On the Foreman grill. It takes a little longer this way but it comes out super! Can usually get 5 pieces of bacon on it.

I never make more bacon than I am gonig to use in 2-3 days time. I put it in a ziplock bag, make sure to squeeze the air out before sealing. Should be good for up to a week.. but I'm kind of paranoid about things like that. :nod

Never heard of anyone cooking bacon in the oven!

I have never been happy with the quality of microwaved bacon, but oven bacon can be decent, do the following:

Get out a roasting pan, or a cookie sheet with some ledges, put some raised wire grate cooling racks on top (so there is a space between the bottom of the rack and the top of the pan) and put the bacon on the cooling racks, then bake. This allowed the bacon to cook evenly on each side, and lets you save the bacon fat for cooking other things later on.

Nitrate issues aside, I've done bacon on racks in the oven and I've done it directly on the cookie sheet and I find the racks produce a far inferior product.

Bacon needs to 'fry' in it's own grease. This is the secret to tender/melt in your bacon. If you do it on a rack, the fat renders/drips below and the bacon just doesn't turn out as tender.

If you transfer the bacon to paper towels right out of the oven, you get about the same amount of fat in them then if you did them on racks, so it's not like frying them in their own grease lowers the final fat content (if that's what's concerning you )

Hey - As mentioned before, this is a thread in the cooking forum, so, a lot of this discussion above was off topic, I'm pruning the thread.

The George Foreman is awesome for bacon--it comes out perfect in just a couple of minutes and there is no grease splatter all over the place! If I nuke mine it only takes like 1-2 minutes--so microwaves really vary, If I did mine for 5-6 minutes I'd get little bits of charcoal!

I keep cooked bacon in a zip loc bag in the fridge for the week. Just like those above mentioned, I make mine once a week every week. I am a bacon addict...I figure anything can taste better with a bit of bacon in it!! You will have no problems with them spoiling if you eat it within the week. My challenge is more along the lines of making sure the bacon makes it through the week ... but that is another issue :yes
