  • sardines...

Just wondering, does anyone like sardines? I actually do, and can eat them straight from the can but my husband can't come near them because of the smell. When I was a kid I remember listening to an Enid Blyton tape over and over, Twins at St Claires, and the girls had a midnight feast in the dorms featuring pork pies, condensed milk and sardines... and they thought sardines were the biggest treat ever!
In the US I don't hear of people eating them much, is this true? My Scottish family adore them of course. If any of you in the UK have some recipes to share I'd be thrilled. The most adventurous I get is to mash them with a bit of mayo.

mY GRANDMOTHER WAS FROM GEORGIA AND WE ATE SARDINES ALL THE TIME AS CHILDREN. I DON'T KNOW MANY PEOPLE WHO EAT SARDINES IN THE US. MOST PEOPLE TURN THEIR NOSE UP AT THEM.

BUT I HAVE TRIED SARDINES IN MUSTARD AND TOMATOES SAUCE....STRAIGHT OUT OF THE CAN.

      Re: sardines...

      Hi,
Added sardines to my breakfast omelette and was actually so good! I recommend people to try it, little mayo, some spinach, maybe even tomato inside an omelette.

Packed in oil out of the can? Yeah, my mother fed them to me like that as a kid. They taste better if you try not to think about them too much. Very high in calcium, as an aside (this is because you are eating the bones). Never had them in a recipe though. I don't usually like fish so I think I'd have a hard time with them in any other form.

              Re: sardines...

Sardines are good and I do have a few cans in the pantry as "emergency" food. I think they taste better than canned tuna fish. So I use sardines in place of tuna for tuna salad/mayonnaise, etc.

But my all time favorite is fresh herrings pan fried in bacon fat! Yummy. Also my local market sells kippers imported from Scotland---delicious!!!!!!!

Sounds delicious! Canned mackerel is good too. I got some the other day in a Thai green curry sauce and it was 1 carb for the whole can plus 1g fiber!

Mash sardines, mix with a little mayo, and "dip" into with wedges of red onion. Gargle profusely thereafter

                        Re: sardines...

All canned fish are excellent for a snack but I found that they got bland very quickly and I could hardly swallow more than a couple mouthfulls.

What I do now is awesome.

I mash a couple teaspoons of avocado with the same amount of sour cream or mayonaise, then I add 3 times that amount of fish.

Now I add some spice and chopped garden herbs and WOW!

It may look a bit funky but give it a fancy French name and they'll love it!
