Nurselady, 2big recommended a erythritol sweetened candy bar. I'll second that recommendation.

'ZCarb' brand is my favorite - that can be found at walmart
'At Last' brand is good and can be found in supermarkets.
Hershey's 1 carb is also erythritol sweetened - walmart as well.

Ok I have this list and I will take it to the store with me when I have the urge and gumption to try to see if these 1. taste any good and 2. cause me GI distress.....

I am just not at this point (of course my cravings are subdued ) convinced that this is worth the money or the effort..but when the cravings come back and I want it ...it will be I am sure....I loved plain old Hershey bars!...maybe the sf is good as well? I imagine sf candy not melting in your mouth is that correct?

thanks again for all the help!!!...you are great! :hug

scott Is Hersey's lactitol free now? I know that was the big issue when they came out as lactitol is very cheap to make and use but very very GI bad the most volitol of all of them.

Nurslady I can't say if they will or wont cause distress as I can't eat them as they have soy in them.

Depends on the Hershey product. The sugar free stuff contains either lactitol or maltitol. The low carb stuff contains erythitol.

Scott where the heck are you??? I you have a way with convincing.... went into a Walmart (that in of itself is not something I have ever said before ..or ever will say again by the way ....that place was way too overwhelming for this girl!!!! )...and bought the kind you said was your favorite....Zcarb ...dark chocolate..and it is sitting on the table ... I need to know ..if I eat this thing ..and it is going to cause me GI distress..what is the time frame I am looking at here before the onset of these scary symptoms....this is kind of funny..I looked at the bar and said ..is it worth this?...so far no...but I am planning to making a huge deal out if it anyway!!!!...LOL....

ps I just looked at the bar ..it has Splenda in it so I will take a benadryl!!!....

NL are you sure you want to do that? My allergist told me every time you are exposed to something you are allergic to you will increase your sensitivity to it and the reaction will just get worse and worse.

Nurselady, I'm here. I didn't think through the whole splenda angle - sorry.

Erythritol will not cause you gastric distress. 2big taught me about this and then I went and researched it thoroughly. In order for it to cause digestive problems (bloating/gas/laxation) it has to make it to the large intestine. It doesn't go that route. It's absorb through the stomach, processed by the kidneys and peeed out.

Eat a good meal and then follow it with a bite of chocolate. You'll be fine.

LOL....there you are!!!..I love all this learning about the GI tract!!!!.....I am feeling a bit like taking chances today!!!....I may eat it..it is still on the table!!! and it does look and smell like chocolate!!!!...DH almost ate it..but I jumped and saved it ....considering this is almost a sure thing for not causing problems it makes it less of a horrifying experience!!!.....how long does it take for things like Manitol to cause the horrors that I hear about?....is it hours or moments??? Thank goodness no one ever called me as a consulting nurse to ask this!!!....

depends on your gut motility, the health of your gut flora and thetotal amount in your system form all other sources.

Some folk hear and feel it in less then 20 min and others it is hours later some get nothing at all.

Nurselady, you can buy erythritol in bulk - many people do. It's kind of pricey, though - 7ish per pound. It also has a cooling effect in the mouth, so it doesn't really work on it's own. Most combine erythritol with splenda, but you could combine it with something else.

Zcarb is a very conscientious company, Russel Stove, obviously, is not.
