  • Taco Bell question

Ok so I really had no choice but to order something from taco bell this weekend. Only place we were going and i was starving. So please tell me i didnt do so bad.. I heard their beef has sugar in it.. so I ordered a taco salad and got it with no beans and chicken isntead of beef. So basically it was shredded lettuce, chicken, sour cream, tomatos, and i added the salsa cup. I only crunched up a small piece of the shell and mixed it in. It wasnt the best tasting thing, but I felt better that i didnt eat the other stuff. Any suggestions on taco bell things that we can eat?

Avoid taco h*ll like the plague in future! thats my only advise to you.

You did well in a bad situation (except the shell, bad bad!) dont worry about it too much.

I avoid Taco Bell. To many tempting foods. I would do much worse than you did. The shell alone is like 35 carbs. Good you only used a little. It is hard being in situations where the choices are limited. It sounds like you did the best you could, given the circumstances. I wish there were restaurants specific to diets. lol... Like an Atkins chain!!! lol...

try checking their website to see if they have a nutrition calculator. I'd imagine there'd be a lot of hidden carbs in their meat.

Something about taco bell has always put me off, even before i low carbed, i just never really thought their fillings tasted 'real' ....

            Re: Taco Bell question

Well, from my point of view the worst thing you did was let yourself get starving and in a situation where Taco Bell was the only option you could have.

On the one hand, I realize that things happen. On the other hand it's all about planning ahead. It's a good idea to always keep some legal snacks on hand so that if you are in this situation again you can stave off the hunger till you can get something legal. Even if only long enough to get to a burger joint to get a bunless, ketchupless hamburger.

Took a quick look at the Taco Bell website. You can customize the menu items to leave off certain things. I did a Taco Salad with chicken, beans, cheese, sour cream, salsa, lettuce and tomatoes. Left off the shell and a couple other things. They call it 38 net carbs. Not sure what they put in their chicken but when I did it again without the chicken it's only 19 net carbs (4 of which comes from the salsa). They surely must sugar their chicken because wow it's worth 19 on it's own.

One thing to keep in mind is alot of chain restaurants have nutrition calculators on their websites, if they don't try their 'contact us' link and ask for one. If there are restaurants you do go to frequently or once in a while, you can look up menu items before hand, then when you get there, you'll know what your best choices are.

for a lot fo the fast food places like wendy's, mcd's etc, if their site doesnt have a calculator, trying doing .ca instead of .com when you type in the address, it'll take you to the canadian site. I think by law here they have to provide the information..

McDonalds grilled chicken (like you can get on the salads) has 3g carbs -- pumped up with sugar water (and tons of salt), apparently. I suspect that's what going on with taco bell's chicken.

They do that with most restaurant meats, even steaks in nicer restaurants. Why do you think your steaks at home never taste quite the same as the ones at say Applebees? They inject them with seasonings like Astro said. Never judge a book by its cover when eating out!

I used taco bell's calculator because I was curious about the ground beef.

The regular taco salad with all the obvious carbs left off has 17g/7 or 10 net carbs.

If you then *also* leave off the beef it has 13/4 or 9 net carbs. Whatever is being added to the beef has 3g of *fiber*, which I find interesting.
