    Thrifty - whatever you want to call it - is an important concept for those of us with compromised means - nuff said - ...


    What CAN one do with those so-called leftovers such as:

    olive brine?

    bacon grease?

    Potato cooking water?

    (etc) -= please add your own !!!

    but regained ~20# in '07 in less than 3 weeks! And again early '08 ...Was in HEAVEN -got to 150, for awhile, then got too busy, and gave in too much... and... OK holding pattern "keep it together..."

    I don't know what you'd do with potato water-there must be starch in there. But bacon grease is easy! Everything tastes great with bacon grease, starting with a nice hot bacon dressing on spinach salad Cabbage fried in bacon grease. MMMMM.

    I'll be curious to see what folks come up with for olive brine!

      Olive brine--use it as a base for oil and vinegar type salad dressings, as a marinade for meat.

      Bacon grease--use it as you would any cooking oil.

      Potato cooking water--I don't cook with potatoes as much as I used to, but back in my body fat days, I used to use the cooking water to cook other vegetables in. Eventually, the water will pick up enough vegetable flavor that it can be used for soups. I also used to water my house plants with it.

        I've used olive brine as the liquid when baking focaccia or other sorts of "Italian" breads for my boyfriend, it gives a really unique taste, and you don't have to add salt.
