    Re: 2008 Low Carb GARDEN!!!!

I picked spring onions, radishes, baby spinach, different types of mesclun, Swiss chard, and sorrel today! Yum! My salad was good!

I'm jealous. Last night I filled 10 water jugs with hot water to spread on my garden bed and then covered everyone with three layers of sheets. They survived the freeze, thank goodness. Where is that global warming when you need it??

I used toilet paper to make my own seed tapes this year, and it worked like a charm. I bought a packet of spicy mesclun and a packet of salad mesclun, and I sat with tweezers and sorted the seed according to shape. Then it was easy to make seed tapes for each of the seed types so they were together instead of all mixed up. I like endive the best, so I knew which seeds were endive and planted more. They were nicer than any store-bought seed tape I have ever used.

What makes the seeds stick to the toilet paper?

You cut narrow strips of toilot paper and place the seeds down the middle of a strip. Then, you put another strip over the top and dampen the edges with water and press together. I let them dry over night and they never come open. You can't handle them much while they are damp, but after they dry, they hold up really well.

I managed to find pineapple sage at the Farmer's Market yesterday morning and I found purple sage at the Farm Bureau, of all places. I am now a happy gardener! The only thing I have not found is pablano pepper plants or seeds, but I will live without them.

I turned around one day and my beans had been eaten! My two tomato plants I have right now are looking pretty good. Cucumbers have come up and radishes are flourishing. My daughter planted everything though and everything is insanely close together.

Cool! Good activity for the dead of winter when the garden bug hits.

I picked some of my onions and radishes today too. I can't believe they are ready to eat. The lettuce I planted is huge too.

I planted containers of spinach, watercress (looooove watercress!), and basil on Saturday. I also planted some snow peas (loooove snow peas, because if they don't fruit, the leaves are edible and taste exactly like the peas!), cilantro, parsley, and marjoram.

I also started some tomatoes (cherry, roma, and big boy), okra, eggplant, and buttercup squash. I'm hoping to break ground next weekend for zucchini, corn (yeah, I grow corn--never get any ears, but I like the way the plant looks), broccoli raab, and Swiss Chard.

I didn't know that! Mine are about a foot tall right now, but don't have blooms, yet. I'm going to have to try the leaves. I did see some salad recipes once that used the leaves on top of the salad.

I am so enjoying fresh picked greens, spring onions and radishes in my salads every day. Yesterday I made a salad with mesclun, swiss chard, sorrel and some fresh basil leaves. I dressed it with an orange poppy seed salad dressing, and it was to die for.

                        Yup, they're edible!

Here are two articles about them:
                        http://www.sunset.com/sunset/food/ar...154415,00.html
                        http://starbulletin.com/2002/05/15/f...ngredient.html

You pick off the tender ends off the tendrils. I found them once at an Asian market (for $1.49 a pound!) and I thought instead of paying that price for them, I'd grow them instead.

It doesn't seem to hurt the snow pea plant, because it will send off more tendrils as a response to picking them off. Also, I've noticed that if I pick the ends, the plants become more bushy rather than gangly.

I went out and tried some, and they were very good. Since I've had to grow my snow peas in pots, I never get enough to bring inside to cook. I love them raw, so every time I see a young, tender one, I just pick it and eat it right there.

I love broccoli leaves. I always cut them up and stir fry them with the broccoli. The stalk of the broccoli is my favorite veggie to dip. I peel it and cut in sticks and it is so crunchy and delicious.
