  • Veggie Ideas for my meal plan? Tomatoes and Sugar.....

I need some ideas for veggies. I do not want to go over my 3 cups but I need more veggie carbs acording to fitday. I eat 2 cups mixed greens for my salad at lunch and am afraid to add more veggies( with 1 cup asparagus at dinner). Fitday is telling me my carb ratio is 1% and I have been recommended to eat more carb filled veggies. Can I just add on more veggies to my salad and keep it 2 cups? I do not get full at lunch without the salad no matter how much meat I eat.

I want to add tomatoes but I am worried about the sugar content. How do you guys feel about eating tomatoes?

    Thanks!!!

Once you do fitday I recommend forgetting about the cup thing. It is there to make thing very easy for beginner Atkineers. But once you are into measuring and counting carbs more then go with the 20 carb limit and don't worry about cups. But of course you will still eat from the allowed list only.

Don't be afraid of veggie carbs. I think the most important thing we can learn early on the Atkins journey is to eat our vegetables and find new ways to prepare them. If we can go through the rest of our eating life eating lots of veggies we will likely be quite healty. It is not the veggie carbs that caused us to be fat. Veggies rule.

So yes eat your tomatoes if you like them. And start experimenting with new stuff. I found out I like some veggies that I had not even heard about before.

Ditch the mixed greens and start looking at the other vegetables on the "Salad list". Lettuces don't have a great nutrient profile---they are filler. A mixed salad of cucumbers, sweet peppers, jicama, radishes, etc. will give you more nutrients and more fiber than a green salad.

I love my salads too much to not eat them for lunch(mixed greens seem to fill me up the most) so I was thinking on cutting back to a cup of mixed greens and bring in more veggies for lunch. I had a half cup of Jicama today and enjoyed it as part of my lunch with my salad. I will start adding tomatoes or avocado's as well.

If what you are saying is true about not being to anal about using the measuring cups can I get away with two cups of mixed greens plus half of an avocado and some jicama at lunch(with chicken)?? I would love to be able to eat my greens still(2 cups) since they are so low in carbs and just add in more veggies at lunch plus my one cup of veggies at night(I usually eat asparagus at night).

I guess I don't see why I can't increase my veggies beyond 3 cups in I stay under 20grams of carbs all day(including everything). Am I wrong to think that??

Thanks!!! (I think I over-analyze this diet but I am not seeing any results and want to do the best I can at it)!!

If you're doing the Atkins plan as Dr. Atkins wrote it, you stick to 3 cups of veg during Induction phase. Induction phase is a minimum of 14 days, so on Day 15 move to OWL and add 5 net carbs of the Induction veggies in addition to the 3 cups from Induction.

By the way, don't fall into the mind set that the lower carb veggies you eat the better. Everyone has their own Carbohydrate Losing Level, and I've seen too many people make the mistake of eating too below that and hit a stall.

So ditch the lettuce, add the more substantial veggies from the "salad list"---there are about 20 veggies on that list, so you can choose a wide variety.
