  • Meal ideas for a poor college student

Ok I dont know if any of you have gone through college or are in college....but i'm sure you know that you dont have much extra in terms of funds, especially when you have bills (as I do) to pay.

So short sweet and to the point, I need some relatively cheap ideas for cooking. I tried to do this and went on a short stint of buying chicken breast. Howevr it is $6 a bag and get maybe 3-4 days worth of meals from it. Although I love chicken and it worked GREAT for me last time, it's kinda expensive. Maybe I'll buy some ground beef and make hamburgers or something i dunno. What are you suggestions.

Watch the sales at the grocery stores. Tuna is also pretty cheap & is great for lunch. Eggs are also a good buy. Get some bulk sausage & make a breakfast quiche. Watch for beef roast to go on sale & that will give you several meals. The key is to just watch what is on sale & go with that!

Are you in a dorm or an apartment? Here is my favorite quiche recipe. This site has great recipes!

Walmart super centers here have a 10 lb bag of chicken leg quarters for $4.80. I buy a bag and go home and bake ALL of them at once. When they are done, I put one leg quarter in a zip loc bag in the fridge. Then each day, I just pull one out of the fridge ready to go to work with me. I put it in the microwave in the bag at lunch. Works fantastic.

Get yourself a slow cooker. Those will be great for dorm living. I buy turkey legs and thighs and put them in the slow cooker for like 6 hours. Same for pork roasts (shoulders, butts), beef roasts (chuck or round). The meat will be so tender and yummy. Then you can separate it into baggies too, for more grab and go food.

I find these things to be the most helpful. Ground beef is fine, but it's not grab and go. The crockpot/slow cooker has been my BEST FRIEND.

As for veggies, I buy those 10 ounce bags of frozen veggies and eat an entire package with whatever meat I have that day. Cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, etc. Cabbage is another cheap and filling veggie. Mixed with some mayo and dill weed makes a great salad.

I will second watching the food sales. If you don't have the means to get around to alot of stores, Super Walmart does price matching on identical products from other stores, they do it here so I would assume there it's the same.

I suppose I should have added taht I do not live in the dorms. I live in a house with 3 other guys.

Awesome. That Quiche looks/sounds good yum. And I do have a slow cooker so I will try and make more meals in that. Now lets just hope that the roommates dont see a big crock full of stuff and decide to eat it. With 4 people it owuld go fast and I wouldn't be able to afford to keep doing that.

EGGS!!! I am in college and I have to take snacks, etc so I don't go over my 6 hours without eating. We get 5 dozen eggs for about $6-$7 (not sure, I have to ask) but I eat about six a day and it has really cut down on the amount of meat I have to buy.

In the quiche I use cheese with jalapenos in it. I find it easier & just as good!! Tell your roommates hands off!! Get a container for the frig & put your name on it. They should respect what is yours as I'm sure you respect what is theirs.

Any quiche is good, you can make so many different varietys and according to Linda's site (link posted above by Ozlover) most quiches are freezable. I'm on a budget as well (although I've finished college! haha) I'm totally going to steal these ideas!
