  • Pinon pine nuts

I saw raw pinon pine nuts at the supermarket this evening and bought a 8 ounce bag of them. I bought the soft shell Nevada type.

Anyhow, I tried them raw (delicious, not at all strongly flavored like the regular pine nuts, but much sweeter). But I've been surfing around the net for recipes and the real way to prepare them---and of course I've found conflicting advise.

So, does anyone have any experience with these things? Do I soak them before roasting them, like one website advised? (Can I grow one of these things into my own pinon pine tree?)

The nutritional info on them is pretty good too. 1 ounce has 4 total carbs, 3 fiber carbs (I plugged the other numbers in to a hidden carb counter and the labelling looks legimate!).

I love Pine nuts...you can toss them in oil and salt with out shelling them and then just eat them like you do pumpkin or sunflower seeds

unfortunatly they only grow in very high desert and are a huge mess to harvest they are inside the cone covered with sticky tar.....

I buy them shelled as well and they are another nut I have no problem with ... try adding them to sauces you put over poultry!....

    they are wonderful nuts!

I love them too but have only used them when preparing Hummus, my Palestinian friend taught me. He would lightly brown them in a frying pan with a good olive oil and pour the oil and the pine nuts ontop of the bowl of hummus, it was wonderful!

Thanks, so I don't have to soak them ahead of time and do all this weird stuff to them....whew!

I think I'll go back and buy another 8 ounces....these things are really yummy. They're not at all resinous like the pignoli pine nuts.
