  • What kind of fryer should I get?

I know a lot of people fry stuff in oil/lard. I'm just not sure what kind of fryer I should look for. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Paul, I use fresh lard. If you can find pig fat, fry it just with itself and it will make fried "cracklins" and the oil leftover can be refrigerated for months!

Thanks Joy. I guess what I meant though was if there's a decent type of deep fryer I should be looking for

        Ohhhhhh, sorry.

I got one that has a lid that closes and is a self contained unit. Not much help I know....

I follow Alton Brown's philosophy when it comes to kitchen gadgets...if it is not a multi-tasker, don't buy it.

I use a heavy, cast-iron pot that's coated with enamel. Has a handy lid, too. It's the same 7qt pot I use to make soup. When I'm done using the grease, I store it in a glass pyrex container for next time. It doesn't take long for the grease to heat up in the pot and I use a thermometer to check the heat. It's one less gadget to clutter up my kitchen countertop & cabinets and clean-up is a snap.

            Hi Bio,
That sounds like a great fryer. Who's the manufacturer so I can find one, Thanks.

              Hi Sherry!

Well, my fryer ISN'T your typical fryer...it's a "French oven." Here's a link to my pot that I use for a multitude of recipes:

              Le Creuset - Product Guide

The price can be pretty scary, but you CAN find them on sale and it'll last you a lifetime. It is well worth the investment.

I can fry, deep fry, braise, roast, stew, boil, bake, and so forth is this versatile pot. I love it!
