Re: alternative to potatoes for shepards pie?
I found a recipe on Linda's Low Carb website called Josie's Shepard's Pie that used cauliflower for the potatoes. The recipe said to spice it up because it could be bland and I did, but it was still bland. The next time I make it, I will use different seasonings. I will try it again because it wasn't bad, it just 'needed something.
If you find a better one, I hope you will take the time to share it because we are always looking for good recipes! Good luck!

Cooked cauliflower (drained well), pureed with the addition of butter and a little sour cream makes a good substitute for mashed potato.
If you grate it raw on a ricer and microwave a few mins, it makes substitute rice too.

Re: alternative to potatoes for shepards pie?
I love mashed cauliflower as a potato substitute, and I suggest adding salt, pepper, chives, onion, garlic to make them REALLY flavorful, (like those "fancy" restaurant mashed potatoes with the skins...) though I'm not sure how well that would mesh with shepherd's pie!

Erm...no, not really. LOL! While they're both cruciferous veggies, I can't imagine broccoli would have the same "starchiness" as cauliflower. However, you might be able to use turnip, rutabaga, or daikon?START 8/16/06 @ 270+~MG1: 220-12/2/06~MG2: 210-1/07~MG3: 199-3/2/07~MG4: 190-4/27/07~MG5: 180-7/04/07~GOAL: 170

Re: alternative to potatoes for shepards pie?
To give the mashed cauliflower a more "earthy" flavor and make it more similar to potatoes, use 1 part white turnip to every 2 parts of cauliflower. That is, if you use 1 cup of cauli use 1/2 cup of white turnip in your mash. The turnip will boil at the same time as the cauliflower.~Megs~
