  • Remember when? Food Myths

liv wrote this in another thread
The egg story is a reminder how powerful some ideas can be. When they did their eggs studies in the 70s they fed the participants dried egg yolks and the cholesterol levels went up. So then we got all those recommendations to cut eggs. And I think this is what people believe when they think eggs are unhealthy.
But recent research has proved that if you eat the whole eggs it can actually lower cholesterol. This is because eggs contain naturally protective lecithin which reduces absorption of cholesterol (this had been destroyed in the drying process.
    Eggs totally rock.
That reminded me when avocados were "bad" for you because they were high in fat. Now everyone and their mother are eating avocados because every magazine and health expert say they are good for you.

What food myths do you remember?

"Butter is horrible for you! Eat healthy margarine!" Then they learned about trans-fats!

"Eliminate fat from your diet." Then they said "Eat healthy fats for your heart and skin."

"Avoid coconut oil at all costs. It's saturated and will KILL you." Now it's hard to keep up with all the benefits of coconut oil.
