  • How about dogfood :)

    You read it right.. dogfood.

Our dogs are picky eaters and well, Jack quit eating dogfood (he was being given tons of people food scraps by my sister and thought it tasted better).

So.. instead of canned dog food, we're feeding them boiled ground beef with rice and vitamin E or Safflower oil on top.. depends on whats closest at hand. We're going to try adding some garlic and steamed carrots tomorrow. Sunday we're going to make dog stew.. and add some beef gravy to the mix.

Any ideas on what to add to their dogfood? They start their vitamins tomorrow..we're crushing them up before putting them in their dogfood.

Well, I suppose if you don't like the Brie, ....
You know I really think that most dry dog foods are probably not particularly healthy, but since I don't currently have a dog, I have never thought about it, but I do know there are some things that doggies can't eat, grapes for one and onions for another. I found this web site but this gal could also be full o beans also. http://www.pet-grub.com/part2/
My dog was the same, sooooo spoiled, that I had to dump left overs all over her food or she absolutely won't eat it either. Isn't it great how dogs train us/ LOL

There are a lot of people who make their own dog food.

There was a spot on one of the morning shows not too long ago about a person who made her own dog food, but that she could eat it, too.

Many people buy turkey or chicken necks, add veggies and things to the mix, and feed their dogs that. Is it called the RAW diet? I can't remember the letters (acronym).

We often give our dogs a can of salmon.

I was told to put whey powder in their food to give them a shiny coat. I used to sprinkle it on the dry food. I don't often feed them wet food, but they do enjoy "people" food often.

My dogs especially like the microwave flax bread. They stand in line for it as soon as it exits the oven (I don't give it to them then, but they await their chance). They seem to like anything with flax in it. One dog is a carbohydrate nut, and will eat baked goods; the other one is not nearly as particular about those types of foods, but certainly loves fish and meat (she is part wolf).

        Thanks for the link Desert!

They get dry dogfood during the day.. can't remember if it's Iams or what it is.. it's lamb and rice and comes in small bites. Jack can't do big dogfood because of teeth.. that and he's 15yrs old (pretty old for what most people call a big dog) and hasn't really ever eaten dry dogfood in his life he's always ignored it for the most part, once in a while he'll eat it but not very often.

CM is the raw diet the one they call the BARF diet?! Can't remember what the BARF stands for but it always grossed me out. I'd be afraid to feed them raw stuff because of bacteria and all those fun things that could be in them.

Hadn't heard about the whey powder, I'll have to look into that. Taz's coat is shiny, his problem is with dry skin.

Heh.. never thought of giving the dogs flax before! Wonder if they's actually eat it? Maybe I could mix it in their stew.

ROFL! We had a wolf hybrid (3/4 wolf 1/4 malamute supposedly) that loved spaghetti! If you gave him a choice of spaghetti or steak he'd eat the spaghetti first. He wasn't fond of baked goods though.. after Taz came to the family Wookie (the wolf, he passed on in August at the old age of 14) learned to eat whatever scraps he was given because if he didn't the little dog would.

my dog gets one raw frozen meaty beef rib for breakfast and a bowl of some kind of pretentious dog food my husband insists she needs...she has a cow erector set going in the back yard with all her half eaten raw bones....

              look doggy Atkins!

                Cow erector set. :laughing

Frozen bones? Kind of like popsicles for dog?! I doubt Jack would touch them though.

My dog eats a raw meat diet (mostly chicken/pork/lamb with bone), infused with carrots, apples, alfalfa, celery and yams (sweet potatoes). He is supplimented with flax oil drizzled over the top, powdered kelp/barley greens (great for a black shiny coat) he also gets raw eggs occasionaly and olive oil if I am out of flax.

He had blood work done last month and the vet said he has never seen a healthier dog

Catkins, a low carb diet for diabetic cats.

'It's the Atkins diet for cats,'' she says, joining others who cleverly call the diet Catkins. ``The thing that convinced me that this was the right diet was the improved quality of life for these cats.

                    ``They became kittens again.''

Wellness is my Cat food of choice. (they won't touch raw, otherwise they would be eatnig raw too)

I reccomend Wellness to everyone I know, and they have all been ecstatic with the results. (clean teeth, shiny fur, less mess in the litter box, not to mention virtually no smell)

As for my Dieseldog, it costs me about $75/month to feed him.. that's about $1/lb (he eats 2.5lbs/day which is twice as much as a 70lb dog would eat) but I buy it preground and premeasured out of laziness...

My sister feeds 3 large Malamutes for about the same price, but she buys a lot more carefully than I. She feeds them raw turkey necks, rabbit carcasses (heads and stuff) and chicken backs that she gets for next to nothing from the butcher. She has 2 freezers for dog food and an entire garage dedicated for space, I have a small freezer that we share with Diesel and I have to use my kitchen counters.

The BARF food itself is overpriced because of the name attached (like Atkins LOL) but there are lots of places where you can find an alternative, but Wellness is the next best thing, espcially if he gets a raw meaty bone to chew on.

So diesel..I"m seriously interested in this raw food thing..but you spend 75.00 a month? just wondering though...do you buy monthly? if so how much freezer space doest that take up? or do you buy it weekely and freeze it..not sure exactly how much food we're talking about a week, the premeasured stuff... i guess i can afford that as far as $$ goes...

my pup is just 10 months (very active border collie) and i'm considering the raw diet...heard so much abut it (i'd love the smaller poops haha) but i live in a very trendy section of toronto where the stores selling this, i'd imagine, would most likely be charging top $$. just wondering if you got an average price etc? sorry for all the questions LOL.
