  • xylitol question

I am not sure if this has come up previously... but does anyone use it and is it like a sugar alcohol?.....sorry if this is a done topic but the healthfood store lady insists it does not cause the same problems that the sugar alcohols do :yikes :yikes :yikes and you know I am not about having that problem intentionally!!! LOL also if you do know about it what have you used it for?

I use Isolmat and works great: cakes, bread ..... whatever.

I´ve heard sugar alcohols don´t affect people the same way so ...... you´ll have to try ..... ensive
I´m my best friend and my worst enemy.

Non erythritol sugar alcohols (maltitol, isomalt, sorbitol and yes, xylitol) are a lose-lose situation. You either digest them and they're carby as heck (stalls/weight gain/blood sugar spikes) or you don't digest them and spend a lot of time in the bathroom in pain. Either way you ge the short end of the stick. If you're going to gamble on either weight gain or pain, you might as well experience the least damage to your pocketbook in the process. Your local health food store should have sorbitol for cheaper than xylitol. I'd try that instead.

I've seen studies that compared xylitol to the other non erythritol SAs and I can tell, you, for a fact, there aren't that many differences between them. All the non erythritol SAs can cause tummy troubles. Anyone telling you differently is highly misinformed.

Whatever SA you end up with, make sure you combine it with at least one other sweetener, preferably liquid splenda. With the synergistic boost involved, you use a lot less, so whichever downside that occurs will be mitigated.

Thanks Scott I think I will bag it I am terrified of causing diarrhea the chocolate you told me about was wonderful...I think if I need to have it I just go back into the dreaded Walmart :yikes and buy one ..not worth it..I was not sure if we had talked about it and the lady at the store kept insisting it was fine...
all I can think of is making a desert and having someone in the bathroom for the rest of the night ..not worth it!!!....

Life is too short to intentionally induce such discomfort!! thanks guys

Nurselady, I know that you have your sweet tooth very much in check, but you really deserve a little variety in the occasional treat you do consume. The fact that you can eat those bars without an issue proves that you're able to consume both pure sucralose as well as erythritol without a problem. With these two items, you could sweeten just about any homemade dessert/baked good your heart desires. I'd invest in some liquid splenda (a pure sucralose/water solution) and some erythritol. Neither of these ingredients are cheap, but they're no where near as expensive as the bars you're buying and they'll give you a great deal of flexibility for making delicious treats on your own.

I know the bars are kind of pricey and I have to go into a WALMART to get them :yikes ..I can not deal with any Marts they are big overwhelming and make me freak out :yikes ...but that is for another thread....Ok I can buy the Splenda at a local store and you are right I tend to go for the nuts when I have a craving for sweet but they upset my stomach..(Lord I am a pain) ...anyway where do I buy the erythritol? they do not have it here and it was very good in that chocolate....I am willing to give it a try!!!

Nurselady, doesn't granular splenda make you break out in a rash? My recommendation is to get some liquid splenda, which matches the same sucralose that's in the bar.

The cheapest, most concentrated and, imo, best form of liquid splenda is sweetzfree, but they're currently undergoing inventory problems due to the splenda shortage. The next best option is www.locarber.com. Locarber has absolutely horrible shipping rates and a "we'll ship it when we feel like it" attitude, but with sweetzfree out of commission, there's not much you can do. I get the feeling that the splenda producers are probably scrambling to keep up with the demand and that sooner or later the shortage will become a surplus. Hopefully sooner. If you're patient, sweetzfree might get their inventory issues under control. Diane (sweetzfree) has been very nice and not increased the price as of yet, but we are in a supply/demand economy and since demand is more than supply, the price will probably reflect that at some point

There's slightly better prices on erythritol elsewhere, but since you'll be paying shipping from locarber, you might as well get the erythritol from them as well.

The cinnamon trident is alright if you need to blow bubbles.
