  • Even better heinz ketchup

Here is the question. On Linda's recipe for ketchup, she has it marked as induction friendly, however when I went to the store to buy the ingredients, the tomato paste and sauce had carbs and suger in the list. I looked for "no sugar" cans but didn't find any. So does that mean I can't use this recipe for ketchup. I am a serious ketchaholic and its kliiling me not to have some kind of ketchup. LOL. Anyway thats the question. Thanks

I but the No Salt Added tomato sauce and paste (when I can find it). None of the brands (Hunt's, Contadina, store brand) had added sugar. I think it is the same for most regular (with salt) sauces/pastes.

Check the ingredients. Sugar should not be one of them. When looking at the Nutritional Label, these products will list a sugar amount as tomatoes naturally have sugar in them. That is OK.

p.s. The Heinz Reduced Sugar ketchup is very good if you don't want to make your own.

You're not looking for no sugar, you're looking for no sugar added. According to Low Carb Friends, there is 2% dextrose added to some of the Hunt's sauces, and apparently they suck it up and deal with it as it's pretty minute. YMMV.

A six ounce can of tomato paste (which represents a bunch of tomatoes reduced to a little container) should have 17g of sugar naturally, because tomatoes have sugar. It will have carbs because tomatoes have carbs - about 32g per can.

Here is the tomato paste data: Tomato Paste - Ingredients Descriptions and Photos: An All Creatures American International Vegetarian Vegan Recipe - cruelty free, gourmet, recipes, lifestyle, food, appetizer, appetizers, beverage, beverages, bread, breads, roll, rolls, cake, cakes

This will be similar for the tomato sauce, just less concentrated. Since tomatoes with their sugar are allowed, it should be fine for induction - by the tablespoon, but not by the cup

I really recommend the Heinz sugar reduced ketchup too. For those who can find it.

            Re: Even better heinz ketchup

I just started using the Heinz reduced sugar ketchup purchased at my SuperWalmart. It is great, and as I mentioned in another post recently, I added some horseradish to it and it became a great cocktail sauce for shrimp cocktail.

I am with you Mary! And I love the cocktail sauce with horseradish and sometimes a dash of lemon juice too. I also mix 2 TBSP ketchup with a quarter cup of mayo, a TBSP lemon, and a TBSP cider vinegar to make 1000 Island dressing, then add a dash of Splenda to taste.
