ramps are a very very pungent type green onion plant that looks a lot like leeks but is much stonger. They have actualy outlawed ramp harvesting in the Smokies as the plants were being endangered from over harvesting.

I love to eat them and have been to the RAMP festival on our sifde of the Smokies the last 3 yrs. You will reek of them ofr a few days afterwards as your body will off gas the oils from the ramps. The festivals are more about having a good time and good music. But the air will smell of them. it is one of those you love them or you don't.

Yea, the link I posted above was about them limiting the harvest of them here in our mountains. John is from way up state in WV and they have ramp fesitvals there, he told me how everyone in town would stink for days, and you better eat them or you would have no defense...LOL

so go but do take your Atkins freindly foods as their will be lots of other high carb foods there like at any fair.

most mix ramps with taters and eggs but you can get some wierd meat combos too.

I would love to try ramps, but I think I am outside of the harvesting zone, and I am not going to pay the crazy mail order prices.

Oh well, I have been unable to find rhubarb lately either, so I will make a trip through the farmer's markets this weekend and see if I can get lucky there on either count.
