I have to plant my sunflower fence!!! If you have never done it try it you find a place in the yard where you want a bit of privacy and put the giant sunflowers in the back close together then med then short it looks so nice and really does give you lots of privacy....then the birds come and pick the seeds out in the early fall ...win win!!!!.....oh and I plant my second crop of peas with the sunflower so they grow up the stalks!.... :joy

My Russian Mammoth Sunflowers are alread about a foot tall! :joy I'm going to put in just a few more seeds this weekend so I'll have them blooming a little longer! I can't wait, I love them.

When I had a huge yard and lived out in the country, we used to plant them in various sizes and varieties, they went from about 15 feet high to the smallest ones of about 2 feet high, I put a row of the 15 foot ones, the 7-10 foot ones, the 4-5 foot ones and then the smallest 2 footers it was gorgeous when it was all in bloom and you're right it, made a fence. That plus, they come in colors from bright yellow all the way to a dark burgundy. Very striking when planted together! :yes

I harvested my first bowl of lettuce last night (and I quickly sowed some more lettuce seeds to replace the gap in the planter).

world's most useless gardner reporting in. Though I am useless.. i do try!

So yesterday in the 48 degree toronto weather i went outside (in a parka of course) and planted some herbs which i've never done before. I have a backyard the size of a postage stamp, gotta love living downtown LOL..so i'm doing a container garden this year. I planted lemon tyme, oregano, tricolour sage, and stevia in some small pots. In larger pots i'm trying leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce and one red pepper plant. Threw some zuchini seeds in the ground bout a month ago. they're not doing much (i'm sure the dog running thru them doesn't help).

Up at the cottage my niece and I planted Pumpkin, Cauliflower, Zucchini and watermelon. Have had success with the melons in the past..not sure how they'll do up there since i'm not there to water them.

Do you guys know any other veggies that would do well in containers? I'm thinking radishes might?

you can do radishes over small carots as the radishes develope much fasted and will be havested bueftor the carrots are growing well. you can id you have a 5 gallon bucket do a tomatoe plant but you will need to water almost daily/ once the tomato plant is about 2 feet tall you can use the shade under it to grow more lettuce. Our regular red and green letuce was $2.53 a pound for leaf stuf last week :yikes :yikes so I've got a gold mine in my back yard right now.

i actually was going to buy some red lettue as well..I loved the colour! never had it though..what does it taste like? i just thought it' would be pretty in the garden against the green lettuce.

I think i will do the radishes as well. I'm really hoping my zucchini does come up...i go thru a ton of it a week. it's my favorite veggie.

We had frost last night...hoping it didn't do too much damage. still chilly today as well we have such a short summer here. :sadblinky

Red lettuce taste just like green lettuce. The color is different so it makes for a more colorful salad.

Radishes do well in containers. Spinach does well too---if you like "baby" spinach, the container grown spinach will supply you well with that. The leafy salad greens are good container plants. I have arugula growing in one of my containers and I have watercress growing too.

Green onions/scallions work well in containers. Strawberries are also good container plants.

I ordered a packet of beetberry

I never heard of beetberry before, but if I can eat the berries AND the leaves, why not try it?

Wow that's great..I actually went with alot of salad veggies, I figured they'd do well i didn't think they'd need to root as deep. I'm going to buy more onions now too. i have a bit more room. I'm using long containers, balcony-type ones? There about 8 - 10 " deep hopefully that is big enough. the herbs i just put in individual 8" plastic pots. If i go up north for extended lengths of time in the summer i'm hoping to transport them with me..so i can't really go with anything huge.

I'm really curious to see if the stevia grows well and when dried/ground what it's like. I use powdered and liquid stevia as my sweetener and it costs me a fortune. Be neat if i could grow it myself! I'm hoping to save lots of $$ with my garden.

Hopefully i'm not nearly as useless at growing herbs and veggies as i am with houseplants and flowers!

I use the same kind of balcony containers you do. I keep my lettuces "baby" so once they are about 4-7 inches tall, they go into my stomach The roots are maybe 2 inches long (if that at all). Also, as soon as I harvest a bowl of lettuce, I sprinkle some more seeds on the bare spot, so I'll get more lettuce later.

if you are doing radishes do red bull beets too in the same container but harvert the leaves for some great red color in your slad and don't bother eating the beet part you can cull the leaves and keep harvesting until the first winter frost. If you cover them during the frost with an old blanket you can keep harvesting until you don't get enough sun light to stimulate growth.

                            Radish grens are edibel too.

Radishes are fun too cause they are ready to eat like 3 weeks after planting the seeds! I like things I don't have to wait too long for!

yep radishes are great and you can boil them to lose the radish hot taste and make mock potato salad that can fool real tatersalad eaters and is very low carb for you!
