OK I finally found a jicama but have a few questions. Am I supposed to peel it? I was thinking about a fake french fry! Has anyone tried this?
Thanks in advance!
My first experience with Jicama was in the early 60ies. We moved to Guadalahaja, Mexico and it was served, peeled, sliced and sprinkled with lemon juice, salt and chili power. It was wonderful. I have never see or heard of cooking jicama, as it is mostly water. I think it would be great shredded in a salad, like a bland radish, or eaten fresh. I would be interested to know how you prepared it, and how well it cooked.

OK I got impatient waiting for response about jicama. I just finished deep frying some (cut up like french fries). I loved it! I spiced them up with salt and pepper and some garlic and chili powder....amazing! I think they taste like real FF! Anyway, I notice a very slight sweetness but it's all good. As I was peeling it I noticed it smelled like potatoes to me. Of course, I have very keen sense of smell!
Anyway, I just fried for about 3 minutes or so and it was very good!
Just want to add, I just experimented with one pack of splenda and a shake of cinnamon~! OMG is all I have to say! LOL It tastes familiar although I can't remember what it reminds me of....possibly a funnel cake that you get at county fair or carnival! I love jicama! LOL
yes, i have french fried jicama. it is wonderful. i fried them till they were brown, which took forever. they were very sweet, but then, i think my jicama was a little on the old side.
the next time i am going to grate them, like hash browns, and fry them up that way. i like your idea of cinnamon and splenda. with the already sweet flavor, i bet that would be wonderful!!!
Jicama is wonderful in that it will take on the flavor of whatever you cook it with!
One of my favorite things to do with jicama is to make mock cinnamon apples out of it. DEAD WRINGER taste wise
Peel and slice a jicama thinly.
1 cup diet cream soda
2tbsp butter
1 packet Sugar Free Apple Cider mix
Juice from 1/2 lemon
1-2tbsp cinnamon
1/2 - 1 cup water.
Melt the butter in a large pan. Put the jicama, diet cream soda, SF apple cider, lemon juice and cinnamon and heat to a boil. Turn down the heat and let the liquid simmer almost all the way downItill it's about gone)- stirring it up occasionally. Add the water and let it simmer down again.
It takes quite awhile to cook it down, but YUMM!! Texture wise it stays pretty crunchy, but taste wise? Dead wringer for cinnamon apples. I heat it up and add a tbsp of cream to it and eat it for breakfast.
I also slice up jicama and toss it with a mix of cajun spices and fry it up in a bit of olive oil then dip it in ranch.
I chop it up and just add it to salads too for some crunch.
I've baked it with butter/cinnamon/splenda and that came out pretty good too
I used to love chicken salad with celery, apple and walnuts in it. Well today I made turkey salad with jicama instead of apples minus the walnuts. The jicama gave the same crunchy quality as apples but not as sweet. Pretty good, however, left a bit of bitter taste afterward. I think if I had chilled it slightly before eating and let the other flavors seep into the jicama it would have been better. Will eat other half tomorrow of salad and see. This was my first experience with jicama. Look forward to trying some of the other suggestions here.
LAST NIGHT I FRIED JICAMA LIKE FF'S AND IT REALLY WAS GOOD I THOUGHT IT TASTED LIKE ONION RINGS KINDA SWEET,S0 THIS AM I CUT SOME UP IN CHUNKS ADDED BUTTER,SPLENDA AND CINNAMON AND HEATED IN THE MICROWAVE AND IT WAS WONDERFUL,JUST LIKE APPLE PIE FILLING

you will take that total carb number and subtract the fiber number like all good getting littler Atkins boys and girls know they should to get the net carbs which they count in their 20 carb limit.
Total Carbohydrate 11.47g - Dietary Fiber 6.37g= 5.1g net carbs (whew says Feelin the Power)
