Have anyone heard of this diabetic condition?

Yesterday I went to a new eye Dr. optometrist not a specialist, to have my eyes exam to get new glasses. I hadn't had my eyes checked in 3 years. But every since I fell back in March and hurt my left eye I have noticed my vision getting worse.

I realize at 55 years of age my vision will get worse and most of the changes are because of me getting older. But the Dr. dialated my eyes and then he told me I have snowflake cataracts in both eyes. He asked if I keep close watch on my blood sugar. I told him I have never had a blood test that showed my blood glucose being abnormal. But my dad and on his side of the family have diabetes. My dad died at 65 yrs, due to diabetes. He had Adult onset diabetes, type 2.

I have been eating atkins way for the past 2 years and have lost 94 pounds, so I was shocked to hear that I have a condition that usually goes along with diabetes. He told me to just continue eating Low Carb, of which I will. And the check my blood sugar at times.

I am thinking that I was so close to having diabetes, 2 years ago , and so lucky to have started eating the Atkins way. But I am concerned about these cataracts. I will ask this Dr. more questions when I go back to get my new glasses.

Any thoughts about this would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Becky Sue

    Re: snowflake cataracts

snow flakes are called that because they appear when the doc examins the eyes to be a bunch of small spots in the cortex all the way around nucleus.

current treatment is just to watch them and monitor growth.there is some reports that they do go away as you get conrol of your bllod sugar.

      Re: snowflake cataracts

thanks 2Big for your information. Sounds like 2 years ago when I started eating low carb was the best thing I could have started. If my blood sugar was high I didn't know it. One thing for sure I will pay close attention to it now.
I hope my snowflakes go away by keeping my Blood sugar in control. My dad died of diabetes/heart disease in 1996, so I knew I was a candidate for the disease if I didn't change my WOL.
Another reason to keep low carbing!!!
