  • Pre-Diabetes

For those that don't remember me. I began the Atkins way of eating in September of 2004. I lost over the course of a year over 70 pounds. Then in August of 2005 I had to have a complete hysterectomy. Since having the hysterectomy, this WOE has not had the effect on me that it did in the beginning. I began to gain back weight and became frustrated. Today I went for my annual check up with my gyn and he asked me if diabetes ran in my family. I told him yes, that my father had it. He checked my blood sugar and it was 79. He told me he felt that I was pre-diabetic and would likely develope it. He advised me to go back on Atkins. He said he is doing it right now himself because he too is a diabetic. I know that Atkins is good for people with high blood sugar, but mine is on the low side right now. What kind of effect will it have on mine. He told me he felt as if my body was working overboard to produce enough insulin to keep my sugar low and that it would eventually not be able to produce any. This has hit me pretty hard because I had no idea this was going on. He noticed the symptoms and started asking questions and found out that I have numerous symptoms of it.

I am sorry this is so long, but it's very upsetting to me. I am only 32 years old and have 3 small children. Any input as far as diet and exercise will greatly be appreicated.

    TIA
    Ashlie

    Re: Pre-Diabetes

First off hugs and kisses as I am sure you are scared right now. The good thing is you are pre-diabetic........ that you can change!!! Once diagnosed as a diabetic, you cannot change that. But pre-diabetic is a good thing! HONEST! You can make the changes now so you will never have to be a diabetic. You did it once and you can do it again!!
Did he run an A1C? I would ask him if he could do that so you know exactly where you stand. Also, I would discuss with him testing daily as it is a great tool to see where you stand.
Come here and ask questions! Many highly informed people in this forum that would be more then happy to help.

      Re: Pre-Diabetes

      Hi Ashlie,
You look great and congrats on the Weight loss!
I wouldnt worry too much about it. People go for years n years being prediabetic and never knowing it. The important thing is taking care of your blood sugar issues now..and imo Atkins is great for that. Its the carbs that cause the unstable blood sugars. With this WOE it is much healthier..especially if u are eating only real whole foods at regular intervals. My husband who has low blood sugar eats this way...not for weight loss..but because too many carbs makes his blood sugar spike and go too low.

Is it odd to anyone else that the Dr considers her prediabetic with a blood sugar of only 79? Hmm

      Anyway, good luck!

        Re: Pre-Diabetes

Sorry to hear about your pre-diabetic worries Ashlie... and sorry I can't give you very expert advice, not knowing too much about this...but it seems that the others have done that already, so that's good!!
I just wanted to add my conviction that Atkins is the way to go, with blood sugar issues. It has a real stabilizing effect. Don't worry... you've caught this before progressing to full diabetes, which is really really good news.
